Now this is what I call a forum

Maybe Michael has changed, mellowed since he left F1 but if he hasnt I would not have thought him to be a good candidate for handling a fund to promote safety. This is the guy who :-
-drove into a title contender -twice-deliberately
-Instigated the now banned dangerous tactic of weaving across the track to block
-closed the door to peolpe overtaking
-put competitors on the grass at high speed (Alonso, silverstone comes to mind)
-Parked the car in quali to keep pole
None of the above do much for the safety of drivers. Perhaps this role would be better taken by someone who adhered to safe behaviour and consideration and respect for competitors when they drove. Prost, Hill, Hakinnen spring to mind immediately.

I can't think of many better people, to be honest. There are definitely some big names that stick out, but Schumi is certainly a good choice.
