English is the modern day Latin, the fact that the United States (the modern day Roman empire) is an English speaking nation makes English the prime International Language.

I wasnt aware that the French air traffic spoke in French, doesnt surprise me though, the French are just being their typical selves when it comes to England/English....

its like the FIA has English and French as its official languages, and every ruling and regulation is jointly written in both languages when majority would read the English version! even the French guys at Renault would probably read the English over the French just to better translate with their counterparts in England over the wording of the rules

The French are not doing anything wrong. There are many who do not agree and support English as an International language. I do not. I just speak it because I like it and that is it. And for the record Italian is easier than English as it is the most phonetic natural langauge in the world. It is also far more advanced than English like French is too. For example if I want to say cat in Italian it is gatto. Small cat is Gattino. Add -ino to most words even a proper noun you make the noun smaller. The ist suffix is from English but the Italian borrowed veriosn of -ista can be used more in Italian than in English. For example in English someone that drives a Ferrari is a Ferrari driver, in Italian you can say Ferrarista. You cannot sat Ferrarist in English. English is very inferior and Gypsy. If was not for the USA no one would even care about English and that is a fact.

One of the main reasons today (of course there are reasons in the past such as colonialism) for English to be so successful is its superficial simplicity, i.e., at first glance it's an easy language to learn. E. g., the verbs don't change (conjugation) apart from the third person singular (s) or the plural of nouns is usually very easy to make - just add an s; also nouns don't have a grammatical gender - a big problem in many languages (see der, die, das in German, e.g.).
Anyway, bottom line is that anybody can easily get to a level of English knowledge that affords a basic communication level - that's the key for worldwide success.
Mastering English at a more proficient or even higher level however, is rather difficult for many reasons, some have been pointed out above. I would add that in pronunciation and spelling the exceptions are the rules. It is also the language with the most words, an estimated 500,000 compared to German with about 300,000.
There are easier languages to learn such as Italian.

100 percent correct Dali I would of said the same thing to the word so no need to repeat but just tell you that you are 100 percent correct in my opinion.

The predominant use of English is now so boring, it's even turning native English-speakers like myself off of listening to the music.
That's why the suggestion of a non-national language like Esperanto is even more entrancing. Why should Belgium use a man-made language, when a living language, namely Esperanto is more acceptable?

Although this year Slovenija didn't make it past the Semi Finals, Rebeka Dremelj decided to sing her song in the Slovenian language instead of English. Well done. That's how it should be.

My gf and her mum both love watching eurovision and they also hate it when someone doesnt sing in their native tongue i just give em s*** about the Polish act, infact they were all poo!

The Polish song was my favorite in the end. Silly woman should of sung it in Polish though. I wish she had won. Oh well congratuations to Russia then.

Well, the contest has come and gone, and met my (low) expectations. Brian Barker was right. The contestants should be made to sing in Esperanto. It is a planned language which belongs to no one country or group of states. Take a look at http://www.esperanto.net

Esperanto works and is very much alive. I've used it in speech and writing in a dozen countries over recent years.
Indeed, the language has some remarkable practical benefits. Personally, I've made friends around the world through Esperanto that I would never have been able to communicate with otherwise. And then there's the Pasporta Servo, which provides free lodging and local information to Esperanto-speaking travellers in over 90 countries. In the past year I have had guided tours of Berlin and Milan in the planned language. I have discussed philosophy with a Slovene poet, humour on television with a Bulgarian TV producer. I've discussed what life was like in East Berlin before the wall came down, how to cook perfect spaghetti, the advantages and disadvantages of monarchy, and so on. I recommend it, not just as an ideal but as a very practical way to overcome language barriers whern in another country.

I completely disagree with you: Esperanto is a still-born artificial language nobody considers seriously to learn over English. Not only that, it is elitist and discriminatory when you think about it: poor people will never have a chance to learn it, but they can easily pick up some English.
Esperanto is as dead as Latin and so it should remain. RIP.

and do suggest Esperanto is a good international language well try telling that to Asian or Arab speaking nations! its easy for Europeans speakers to pick up as they use the Roman alphabet or versions of.

and i think what makes a language international will be the language of big corporations and big business. atm English is the language to know in this case but Chinese would be a useful language to learn for the coming future especially if they do become the global economical power over the US
