Hakkinen's trophy case blamed for villa fire

Mika Hakkinen and his new lady was lucky to escape unhurt after the Finn's villa in southern France caught fire on Friday night.

According to reports Hakkinen, his new partner and another woman were forced to flee the villa when the fire broke out. They escaped without injury although were taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.

However, Hakkinen's dog, who was inside the building, was not so lucky.

AFP reports that the initial investigations in the blaze believe it was caused by an electrical fault in a display window where the former F1 driver kept his trophies.

The fire, which took over three hours to extinguish, caused extensive damage to the first and second floors of Hakkinen's £6million 10-bedroom villa, leaving only the ground floor intact.

This was at Monza 1989 when Prost announced he was joining Ferrari, which pissed Ron off so much he dropped the trophy and Prost gave it to the Tifosi.

Here is part of Hakkinen's interview from autosport.com when he talks about the fire:

Q. And can you tell us about your house, there are reports it burnt down last week?

MH: Yeah I was very unlucky with the house. It just burned down.

Q. And it was an electrical fault in the lighting of the trophy cabinet?

MH: Yeah.

Q. And are you going to get replacement trophies?

MH: Yes. I will automatically try to get a solution about how to get them back. Maybe I will make some new trophies – for races I didn't win!
