The FIA has tweaked the wording of Formula One's sporting regulations with the aim of reducing the amount of penalties handed out for on-track incidents.
The governing body published the final version of the 2017 sporting regulations on Tuesday, including a revised section on incidents during the race.
In the past, the regulations listed various different types of incident the stewards should investigate, including "forcing a driver off the track" and "impeding another driver during overtaking". Those have now been removed and replaced with a more straightforward, all-encompassing regulation.
"It shall be at the discretion of the stewards to decide if any driver involved in an Incident should be penalised," Article 38.2 a) of the Sporting regulations states. "Unless it is clear to the stewards that a driver was wholly or predominantly to blame for an incident no penalty will be imposed."
The stewards will also have the power to investigate incidents during the race without prior recommendation from FIA race director Charlie Whiting. Previously stewards would have to wait until after the race to investigate incidents they believed contravened regulations. They will also have the option not to launch full investigations into incidents reported by the race director.
A good thing I guess - we'll see how they implement it...
