Lewis wants no repeat of last year's fiasco

Heading into Monaco Lewis Hamilton has urged McLaren not to repeat last season's mistakes by forcing one driver to allow the other to win.
Last year's Monte Carlo street race sparked the team-mate war that would dominate the headlines throughout the season as McLaren forced Hamilton to stay behind team-mate Fernando Alonso in the latter stages of the race.
It was a decision that irked the Brit, who felt he had the pace needed to overtake Alonso and win. However, McLaren told him to stand down.
This year McLaren could insist on the same situation, although this time it would be in Hamilton's favour as the 23-year-old has a clear 14-point advantage over new team-mate Heikki Kovalainen in the Drivers' standings.
The Brit though has urged McLaren not to pick a winner just yet. Rather he believes the Woking team should continue with their policy of allowing their drivers to race.
"He is an extremely talented driver, and I heard he had a fantastic race in Turkey," said Hamilton of Kovalainen. "He was just unfortunate, but I have no doubts he will be up at the front next time out.
"Felipe Massa had a couple of bad races and has bounced back.
"We are a team and I felt sorry for him (Kovalainen) that he was not able to compete in Turkey.
"If I am not winning then I wish he was and it is the same feeling vice-versa, so I want it to continue as it is, fair and square.
"It would not be right for the team to push me ahead of him."
Hamilton is currently second in the standings, seven points adrift of Championship leader. However, he hasn't won a race since the season-opening Australian GP.
The Brit, though, reckons that could change in Monaco as the street circuit has in the past been a happy hunting ground for McLaren.
"Monaco is the dream grand prix to win, the most important race to win personally," said Hamilton.
"If I feel I can win anywhere, it is definitely Monaco. But you have to be in the right place at the right time.
"And it is difficult to know exactly how we will do at Monaco because there are so many differences to Istanbul.
"Ferrari seem to be really quick in the slow corners, and although our performance will be really good, I don't think we will have the dominance we had last year because the teams are much closer.
"It depends if we can put together a better package for that weekend. I think we can, but it will be closer."

that has been out in the open for ages, what are you trying to say? or should i say stirr?

They told their drivers to hold stations after the pitstops. smart thing to do in Monaco last season when both your cars are 1 minute ahead of P3

i mean i thought that McLaren favoured Lewis isnt that what Alonso fans say? not Alonso like youre trying to point out

This is word and media play... Lewis is saying Mclaren forced him to let Alonso win, when what Mclaren as a team suggested was that he backed off to avoid a potential crash that could have ruined the 1-2 from Mclaren, in Monaco.

Apparently, Lewis' coments come from the fact that he is assuming he was going to be able to pass Alonso at Monaco...

no his comments were made that he didnt have the option to, not that he was going to

So team orders are OK when McLaren deem it to be so. Is that how it works ?
It's OK when x = {q + [q2 + (r-p2)3]1/2}1/3 + {q - [q2 + (r-p2)3]1/2}1/3 + p
BUT not OK when p = -b/(3a), q = p3 + (bc-3ad)/(6a2), r = c/(3a)

Have they got some special flow chart that they work to which establishes if and when it’s morally OK or not ?
Either its OK or its not OK.

Mike this information has been out for a WHOLE year, McLaren have not hid the fact they told their drivers to hold stations there! do you not remember the FIA put them under investigation after Monaco 07?

you should replace your picture there to a pot you can be the spoon because all youre doing is stirring the pot here. commonly called starting s*** i mean why the hell bring it up 1 year later

Rubens i know you have led the whole race but can you pull over for Michael please......

now thats team orders you sook!

This thread is nothing but s*** stirring. McLaren's policy at Monaco has been in operation practically since Ron Dennis took over the team. One driver is given a strategy to suit a race with no safety car and the other driver is given a policy to suit a race should the safety car come out. After the final round of pit stops, the race is called off. This is nothing to do with team orders and the strategy is discussed within the team. That's why McLaren have far more victories at Monaco than any other team by far. Hamilton is not bigger than the team and should be treated no differently than Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen et al. who have driven for the team. Incidentally, if the safety car were to have been deployed at last year's Grand Prix, Hamilton would've won the race in the pits.

But I do not see this as "team orders" in the way that people refer to take place with Ferrari, to me this was just a reasonable suggestion that Lewis had no need to push because unless he was planning to overtake Alonso in Monaco... risking a 1-2 was not in the benefit of the team or the race... and frankly to neither.

The way people refer to Ferrari's tactics... are something completely different. They refer to them as:
Massa won by being perfect in Turkey, and still the team boss criticises him for not allowing Kimi to get his maximum points. Instead of critisicing Kimi for not claiming pole and for banging with Heikki at the start. This is not very nice from Ferrari. This is the sort of difference the Mclaren people are trying bring out......

Anyway this topic is s##t stirring.... :)
