Anyone got any ideas on the engine cover "bat" fin run by Torro Rossa and Renault.
I watched the TR one vibrate and flex for the whole race, the Renault only seemed to be doing it at corners.
I'm wondering why? Cant be damiging the aero dynamics, given the relative pace of the cars, but you would expect it to eh?
So why is it there and whats the purpose of putting something so apparently counter productive on the car?

During testing in Barcelona, Red Bull introduced a striking 'shark fin' extension to the RB4's engine cover (red arrow). The modification dramatically increased the surface area of this section and was introduced to provide better airflow to the rear wing and maximize the car's stability under braking. The new cover interacts in a very complex way with the rear-end aerodynamics of the car and its full potential has not yet been completely exploited. Such radical solutions are often hard to tune, though hopefully not so hard as to outweigh the benefits.

Simply put it aid's in cornering but more importantly it's directing the airflow, less turbulence and more directed downforce, over the rear wing.

Basically what bud quoted.

The above explanations would make perfect sense if the fin was rigid, but the final third of the TR fin was shaking around so much it must have been pushing turbulant air onto the back wing at all times, the Renault only seemed to shake on corners.

That's one thing I noticed also? :?

For a moment I thought this was going to be a thread about this;

I'm going to drink too much on Saturday night and play with my wobbly bits in shame during the race.

What about the bunny or elephant ears on Honda. They did this slight undjulating thing at top speed where they rocked back and forth? Surely that did not make them faster...... not being fast to begin with but...

Yah even Hobb's and Varsha said something like "daym I hope they dont explode'! They were undjulating and shaking so much there could be no advantage to them imho.

Williams now testing the shark fin

I was hoping this would never end up on the FW30, I don't like these "shark fins", I hope they're part of the winglets ban for next year.
