Is it? After him saying the WDC meant more this time than his first i thought he would've gone for No. 1

No, he pushed to keep 44 and Mercedes agreed. I guess he doesn't need a number to say he's the best :P

Did merc have to agree? i thought it was drivers choice.

I would imagine Mercedes would of pushed for the number 1 so it looks better in PR shots to the public having a #1 on the car

Could be. i suppose i can see some other reasons he might want to stay as 44, if it's his lucky number and there is the possibility that Nico could be driving a merc with No 1 on it at some point too so maybe good to keep the 44 for future history books.

I would imagine if Merc wanted the 1 bad enough they'd have got it even if the choice is ultimately the drivers. lewis wanted 44 form the outset and merc agreed.

I'm sure Merc could stick a number 1 on both cars anyway as they are number 1 in WCC. They could then pretend it was a number 1 like the old days.

Maybe they could reduce the size of Lewis' 44 race by race without him noticing

Meanwhile over at Ferrari Vettel asked if he could put the number 1 in his car. Just for old times sake.

Lewis says he is ready to sit down and discuss his contract with ToTo. He wants to remain at Merc for a long time. He has never negotiated his own contract before , he's a rookie and this and is aware that Toto is a successful business man, but lewis says he has read all his previous contracts, he know his worth and he knows what he wants. He also says there are people he can talk to if he needs advice.

I think it would be fool hardy not to have a solicitor to give it a once over as well. Not that I think Toto would try anything but better safe than sorry.

Maybe both sides state their case, argue the toss , then reach an agreement about what they want in the contract...and that's the part Lewis is doing himself, then both sides get their solicitors to look over the small print.

There are so many tricks and twists a really cynical negotiator could pull on a rookie that its really not worth it for Lewis not to have his old man on the end of a speaker phone thru the process. Thats just common sense, thats a free resource that will at least spot the tricks that one guy on his own just couldnt. I am surprised its Toto doing the negotiations, i would bring in a real bruiser and tell Lewis 'its out of my hands, the board choose him' - as Toto would have to consider the ongoing relationship with Lewis if he screwed him too much.

On the other hand Toto comes across as very very eager not to be the guy who killed the winning team by 'doing a McLaren' and so will maybe reveal to Lewis the companies real break points. If I was Lewis I would just play the unsophisticated but 'relative value' obsessed sporting-ego. i.e - ' I dont know jack about revenue or returns, I just know I need to be on more than them 2 muppets Alonso and seb combined, and Imma gonna sulk and b!tch till I get it' :hehe:
