They destroy the tyres but recycle the natural rubber elements left, maybe some synthetic bits as well

I'm surprised to hear there's any natural rubber in an F1 tire

Or in the F1 paddock, eh?

yeah, I thought I heard they're all synthetic now.

Even synthetic materials have to be synthethised out of something available in nature. Rubber is cheap and available and has worked for 100 years. Why would an F1 tyre not contain any rubber? And if it does that would be the element that could be recycled

Pirelli takes around 1,800 tyres to each race, in the two compounds that have been selected in advance for each grand prix as well as a supply of rain tyres in case conditions are wet. The tyres are all made on the dedicated F1 production line at Izmit thanks to the following steps:

1. Production of the shoulder and the carcass on a dedicated line. At the same time, on a parallel line, the belt and tread pattern are produced. Natural rubber, synthetic rubber and other artificial fibres are among the key ingredients.

2. The elements produced by the first two production lines are assembled on a third line, which represents the key part of the production process. All 18 of the major components that make up the structure come together to form a recognisable F1 tyre.

3. The next step, the vulcanisation period during which the tyre is ‘cooked’, determines the definitive characteristics of the compound and structure.

4. Next up is quality control, which takes in a visual check and a scan of the tyre similar to an xray, in order to verify the integrity of the internal and external structure. The circumference and other parameters are also measured to check the uniformity of the surfaces.

5. Finally the bar code is affixed, which acts as the tyre’s ‘passport’. This contains all the relevant data about the tyre and allows its usage to be tracked from production to race.

The final check is to measure the weight of the tyre. In total it should weigh about 8,5 kilograms: about the same weight as an average three-year-old child. The tyre is then ready for despatch to the next grand prix.

Well here is a little chink of light in the bleak grey that is the Pirelli ( go slow and drive like your on eggshells) years.

Lewis says they're a bit better. Jerez wasn't about tyres, but nevertheless Lewis has noticed an improvement.

He said you can push for 30 laps in an interview somewhere. In cold weather, but that's still not too bad. Maybe Pirelli overestimated the requirements of the new PUs and built slightly stronger tyres....which won't be a bad thing.

RBR may try get the tyres changed on safety grounds - they will need a tyre that only lasts 1 lap and can only be driven at 30% of the engines limit :hehe:

I saw the word pirelli in this title thread and posted it here. I realise now this isn't a pirelli thread at all :gonnagetit: will try to amend if I can face using the search function again!

EDIT: Whoop whoop! I think I've done it!
