I think Lewis would find Alonso easier than Nico

Alonso can't qualify as well as nico and Lewis, but I think he could possibly give Lewis a harder time than nico did in the race itself.

Yes he would be able to give Lewis a tougher race than Nico, however if Lewis qualis ahead each time and has the edge on race craft - i.e Alonso will not pass Lewis in equal cars - then he will be like Nico in races - behind Lewis albeit much much closer

The only thing Nico had that gave him any chance at all is his blinding 1 lap speed, diligence and precision. Now I reckon Alonso is at least a tenth slower than Nico and Lewis on a single all out lap. If thats the case then although Alonso is way better than Nico in the race and only a bit behind Lewis - he wont get near him outside reliability or errors

We saw this in 2007, Lewis was faster, in quali and in the race, except Alonso had better setup knowledge and tyre and race management, since then Lewis has no peers in these areas, and if Alonso has a small speed deficit and the 2 cars are going to fini9sh first and second each race, then Lewis would batter him, mainly because he would be on pole each race, and can stay ahead of alsono in the race

I think it's a more complex than that. Alonso is an absolute monster over a race distance and definitely a level above Nico and arguably shades Lewis. He's also extremely difficult to pass and places his car on the margins. It would be difficult to call between him and Lewis. Nico went for a quali setup which flattered him and I'll put both Lewis and Alonso above him all things equal.

Why is it more complex? Alonso may be a monster over the race, but if Lewis is on pole say 19 out of the 21 races in an identical car, with Lewis as fast in the race and with arguably slightly better racecraft, how will Alonso gain track position every race? What does Alonso being hard to pass matter? Lewis is hard to pass is the point here since it will be Alonso starting behind him almost every race
Lets remember the Merc data sharing and strategy preference to the lead driver, if we are discounting any reliability issues for both how do you see Alonso consistently beating Lewis from second on the grid?

I don't think Alonso shades Lewis in races. They were pretty much nip and tuck when they were team mates. If anything I'd say since then Lewis has learnt more and is more likely to shade Alonso, because Lewis was a rookie first time round and in quali Lewis is better.
But without doubt Alonso is Lewis' toughest opponent of any on the grid.

Lewis would have more to worry about Alonso in sh!t cars that break or have issues, or in a sh!t team with a TP thats suceptible to alonsos eyebrows

But in a 3 sec Merc run by paddy, Toto and Niki I would bet any amount with anyone that Lewis would spank alonso silly - on account of the fact that he is faster over the qualy lap and has enough racecraft to prevent Alonso overtaking, for example like Lewis does to Nico. Alonso is a master at hustling a car round a track, scheming and keeping out of trouble and sheer persistence

Lewis has all this, we saw it as a rookie, and Lewis is much much better since then, nope Alonso is not as fast as Lewis and on a race track this means Lewis wins

My point exactly, Alonso, being naturally slower over the Q3 lap, will allow Lewis to get away with the stuff he couldnt against Nico, - the 0.1 sec buffer

You gotta start with this question - how many times do you thing Alonso would outqualify Lewis in a 21 race season?

With that answer we can then look at Nico vs Lewis in races this season and extrapolate Lewis vs Lewis i.e Lewis vs Alonso, try it

I think Lewis' maturity has taken away some of his raw edge and speed and naturally you are a little risk averse. But it's certainly made him a more complete driver. Nico is definitely not faster than Lewis over a single lap. The Mercedes hierarchy have readily admitted including Luuda himself, in public. Yet Nico edged the quality battle for various reasons. That should give you you answer.

This is my point, as a rookie Lewis out qualified Alonso - no contest (beyond rookie mistakes etc) lets be honest. He was as quick if not quicker in races, Alonso had the edge in setup and tyre and race management - Lewis has since then mastered these areas

so where would that leave the pair in a 3 sec car, coming 1st and 2nd all season?

If we put the Alonso respect (deserves it, no doubt) to a side for a second and think about it, How would Alonso consistently pass Lewis on track? He would have to be able to do this like Lewis did to Nico to avoid a plastering - who really thinks Alonso could pass Lewis in races like Lewis passes Nico?
