So why the hype about free outlets? All you really need is a regular outlet in your garage which most garages already have?

I believe you need something special because it's charging a battery, you can't just plug it into the socket.

Its mainly cost and time. At home you can use a normal socket and pay your home rate - on the road the usual culprits will jack a premium on top - as much as they can get away with - also when you are at home, you are travelling so thats the time to plug it in
It wouldnt be attractive if you couldnt charge it overnight at home. Like your mobile phone, say yu dont have a charge at home or at work and yu have to pay for the priviledge to charge on the road ON top of the electricity

I believe you need something special because it's charging a battery, you can't just plug it into the socket.

Here stateside, you can plug them into a regular outlet (110 volts) for slow charging or have a turbo charger at 240 volts for faster charges - that would be the same type of outlet that our electric dryer runs on, so not very special.

Just been checking that out DD. You can plug them into a normal socket here in the Uk but you have to have a survey first to make sure your wiring is up to it. Also you can have a dedicated socket fitted either in your garage or an outdoor one if you keep the car outside.

There's been a couple of guys come round my house offering the service and they run a new cable from where your electricity comes in, to where you want the socket putting.

In the UK, we could have nuclear power plants charging electric cars, we could have forced all public transport onto electric, all taxis, we could have ramped up the subsidies and tax exemption. That would be the bulk of our emissions cut, an example to everyone else that they couldnt ignore

Instead we have all the scaremongers and cheats and liars and climate change deniers and all sorts of other jackarses pipping up,

And its now proven that we crossed the tipping point. - Whats the point of not doing something when there was a chance??

Look at the bright side, the debate ten years ago was whether or not climate change was occurring at all. We then moved from that to debate as to whether or not it was being created by man. Today's argument is just about how bad of an effect it will be really. That's progress.

BTW Spanky, one thing your position against electric because of the rare earth position misses one very important thing. Power plants have been the biggest contributors of CO2 into the atmosphere. Renewable harvested electric power is an immediate impact on reducing that. But electricity generated, the obscene majority of it would go towards things like washing and drying clothes, powering up televisions, lighting and heating homes and cooking food. All things that work without batteries. Our beloved cars have been just a fraction of the problem.

Yeah it s progress. It just doesnt make sense in the UK. Whats the point of being an expensively technological advanced state when you chicken out of exploiting the tech in the face of a few moaners who dont understand jack?
Here in the UK we hosted US planes in orbit 24 hours loaded with nukes, in the frontline of Russias own nukes, to do this we didnt listen to those moaning at the gates and the perimeter of the US airbases, we rode right over those objections, we had subs loaded with nukes on 24 hour patrol in our seas and outside, again, we ignored the moaners. Playing cowboys and Indians with an enemy that were never gonna use theirs like we weren't, but the risk of accident etc was still there
Then when we really need this tech for proper humanitarian reasons - we could have rolled out 100% nuclear powered grid decades ago, and even since being aware of the fossil fuel stuff we could have rolled them out for zero emissions and set an example, pushed electric cars etc
what happens?? - we start listen to the moaners - 'oohh nuclear sounds dangerous', 'we could have an accident' no sh!t sherlock - you mean with those planes overhead rite?? , no with our secure civilian isolated nuclear plants' - 'its scary'
So lets reduce them - great idea - lets not use the technology to give ourselves a break, and now wind power, contributes more than nuclear to the grid. So we could have gone 100% zero emm nuclear, dumping the coal powered crap and started phasing in wind and guess what - SOLAR farms - doable when you have the tech for 24 hr on demand nukes and ICBMs etc
And its not like the clever people didnt know or believe the climate change stuff - they were paid off and bought by a certain lobby - IMHO

Yes, we certainly missed a trick. France is 75 % nuclear and is the biggest exporter of electricity in the world making 3 billion euro a year from this. They undertook their nuclear programme back in the seventies while we copped out.

France is a world leader in nuclear energy and export their technology all over the world.

Can we stick to one argument at a time?

As far as damage to the planet, oil, coal and nuclear are all pretty crappy solutions. Which brings up back to this.... Solar is the best course forward, period.

And now back to our regularly scheduled argument.

Solar is what nature gave us, and what we used for 99% of the time weve been fertilising the earth with our ablutions. Need light at night - the moon silly (like the sun), need to get to the other side of the world? walk silly, you can do it in your lifetime, just learn how to swim ok. Then we had horses - still fueled by the sun via the soil etc etc

Its only in the last 200 years we discovered this cheat - simply dig up all our dead ancestors and previous inhabitants who helpfully stored this harmful carbon stuff for us in the ground deep down away from the air. So now we can be lazy, see at night - light switch silly, get over to the nearest fat food outlet? drive silly, why walk, and you get fat in the process - win win

And the real irony is the same thinking process now wants to replicate natures carbon extraction mechanism, the plants and trees etc with, wait for it - mechanical trees that soak up the carbon we released and stores it deep in the earth - what genius!!!

Even the bio fuels is really trying to replace natures way whilst still cheating some free lard arse friendly lazyness at the same time.

Now solar tech is actually trying to bypass the plants and directly convert the solar energy into energy for transport. The solar panels collect the rays like the plants do and then store it in a battery, and then release it when we need it. leaving the plants and trees to do their thing - everyone wins

But no, lets not change our thinking, lets use the plants, lets remove them from their function, use the solar energy they absorbed and release the harmful carbon the absorbed at the same time. And if we can emit less carbon while removing these plants than they collected, why thats negative, we are not emitting as much as when we just released the carbon without worrying. And then for good measure lets rubbish the attempts to bypass the plants for exactly the same energy extraction by using the technology we have called solar panels batteries and electric cars

And while we are at it lets make sure we scare and misinform others by talking about rare earths and the outrage that they are made in China
