V8 Supercars at Eastern CreekThe Australian Grand Prix seemed to take a step towards moving to Sydney in the future after the announcement of a feasibility study into upgrading the Eastern Creek circuit.

The study, reported to be worth $350,000 by the Australian media, is aimed at determining if the current venue can be brought up to Formula One standards.

The study, carried out by Apex Circuit Design Ltd, will be completed later this year.

Melbourne's Albert Park circuit currently hosts the Australian race, but its contract is due to expire at the end of 2010 and Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has threatened not to renew the deal unless the race takes place at night.

Melbourne officials have made it clear they are not ready to host a night race due to the high costs.

Australian Racing Drivers' Club president John Cotter said the study was "an essential first step in plans to ensure Australia remained relevant in world motorsport.

"Strong competition from emerging nations to secure major motorsport events threaten to marginalise Australia, with a resulting loss in status and tourism potential.

"Equally, there is a real need to ensure that Sydney is well serviced with a motoring and motorsports complex to meet local needs, including driver education, track days and motor industry development requirements.

"The impending closure of Oran Park Raceway in Sydney's south-west will leave the Sydney basin with only Eastern Creek Raceway, and its use is already at near full capacity," Cotter told The Australian newspaper.

Eastern Creek, built in 1990, has hosted rounds of A1GP, V8 Supercars and the Australian Superbike Championship.

Eastern creek isnt exactly Sydney, it is on the outskirts maybe an hour or so from the CBD Mike can you confirm that?

but it would need a massive face lift plus rebuild of the pits and grandstand infrastructure to come close to world standards. but atleast it wouldnt be a street race!

Bud, Eastern Creek is about 40kms west of Sydney’s CBD which is about 45 minutes drive.
Yes and it would need a massive amount of work to bring it up to scratch for F1.

In fact I am going there in two weeks. I was given a V8 Race Experiance Pass for my birthday. http://www.v8race.com/
Should be good.

I agree it may be a way of 'mixing thing's up' but I would rather start my Sunday morning off with a F1 race than anything else, well almost anything  .

Japan is the 3rd largest economy in the world, sponsors move a lot of metal in Japan.

Australia?

I used to complain in the Sony store that we had to wait so long to get Playstation games in Australia when I was a teenager. The owner turned to me and said "Son, if you take the smallest American state it's demand for playstation games is still stronger then this entire country put together."

Japan has the economic clout to tell Bernie to go screw himself, Australia doesn't.

By the way, if the owner of the Sony store said to me "Son, one day you're going to grow up and argue with a <EDITED FOR CONTENT> called Bud on the internet" I wouldn't have believed him...
