Cosworth could be eyeing a return to Formula One, with the support of none other than Bernie Ecclestone.

Although the expensive new engine rules and a lack of customers sent the British company off the grid at the end of last year, Cosworth announced recently it is setting up a new manufacturing center at its Northampton base.

The company confirmed that the facility - to "deliver the next generation of automotive internal combustion engines" - is bolstered by a British government grant.

And according to Speed Week, there may even be an F1 component to Cosworth's next plans.

Buying a turbo V6 from one of just three alternative suppliers - Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault - has rarely been as expensive for struggling customer teams as it is today.

Correspondent Mathias Brunner reports: "I have heard from England that Cosworth is working on a modern power unit for Formula One, and behind the scenes is a certain Bernie Ecclestone.

"The market could certainly do with a not-so-expensive turbo V6," he added.

Brunner said Cosworth did not comment.

This sounds to me like one of the existing engine suppliers is saber rattling saying they are going to leave if x and y is not met. So Bernie has come back with don't matter we have cossie to take up the slack.

Anyone can make the Turbo V6. It's the energy electric harvesting and augmenting that's the tricky bit.

Maybe more like they all pooh poohed the 3 car team, and bernie (like Nato/Obama) is finding out what everyone has been saying behind his back for so long - if you screw someone to death you will have to take care of their relatives and whats left after. Take all the money but if you expect variety and competition then you will have to bankroll all bar the 4 top teams. Ferrari and Renault charge the most for their engines and those engines are not even good enough for their works teams let alone the customers, its therefore cheaper for Bernie to subsidise a cheap option that allows the other teams to turn up, and compared to paying over the top for a mickey mouse engine they can pay a fraction of the cost for another mickey mouse engine thats likely as effective for those teams outside the top 4 - all they need to to is turn up and come last anyways

Its no coincidence that its the Renault and Ferrari customers going out of business. If Bernie can get the British Government to take up some slack - happy days - and we can all pretend F1 is a competition between 10 teams and not a 3 tier series (Tier 1 - the serious - Merc, RBR and McHonda, Tier 2 - the also rans - Ferrari, Williams(sorry frank), Force India, and the plain backmarkers - marussia, hrt (lol), Suaber, Lotus, Lotus 2. Bernie has to do what he has done before - bankroll teams ti make up the numbers because it appears as if the 3 car team idea has gone the same way as the sprinklers on track

Merc, RBR, McHonda and Ferrari - yes i realise in reality at the moment they are in the also ran camp, however they will act like the other 3 come what may, and already get a subsidy to help them out, most importantly they make their own engines and so no matter how uncompetitive they are they will not swap to Cosworth (or Merc),

so when talking about the top 4 in the context of those that dont need the option of cheap engines or any extra funding to ensure they turn up, its also possible to group them as the next tier in the context of seriously using the resources available to try and win

the top tier can exploit the engines they have, the 2nd tier have to exploit the engines they have, the third tier are going out of business paying for expensive engines when they could pay for cheaper bog standard engines and turn up to race without really noticing any difference
