If McLaren is actually willing to welcome Alonso back, with open arms,
doesn't that put the $100M fine they paid in a different light?

No, the kicker would be if he went to McLaren, they suck just as bad in the future as they do right now, AND the prancing horse finds 3s hidden away in its engine somewhere, giving the title to Kimi in 2015. :rofl:

I think Mclaren at the moment has changed things that are positive. Ron being back, Honda historically have a good knack with turbo engines. Where as although initial signs are good with Ferrari there is a lot more unproven variables like MM

Most important is Hondas unmatched experience, research funds and facilities on the hybrid side, not to forget that they are the biggest engine manufacturer, the only thing they lack is F1 or racing nous and pedigree - but thats where Ron (Mclaren) come in - as long as he keeps them at arms length - think Merc have proven that the way to go is to make everything in house (withion the group) - Ferrari dont have this - they have to buy a turbo and other ERS bits and bolt them on - Honda are the only ones next to Merc who can do this

Now depends how much cash and resource they are willing to commit and when, the way I see it is they are keeping options open to either end up as engine provider with a preffered customer (like renault and RBR) or they decide to completely throw the kitchen sink at it with mcLaren as a quasi subsidiary

Ooh,

Well, Ferrari can't expect Alonso to stick around forever, and they've been promising to get over a "blip" for a while now.

Mclaren seem to have made some strong moves recently - Ron back, Boullier as team principle and bringing in Magnussen. Plus I think if they can bring in Honda, it'd be a great addition to the sport to add another engine manufacturer.
