Basically they were taking the risk of DNFing in return for a good show in Spain.

I agree. Did you see how many fans left after Alonso's engine blew?

What do you expect from Spanish FA lambs?

That's difference between a TRUE F1 fan and a 'wanna be' fan.

F1live: Although the expired V8 is still being analysed in detail at the team's Viry-Chatillon engine headquarters, the Frenchman said his initial diagnosis is a failure near the top of the 2.4 litre unit.
He said minor adjustments were likely to be enough to solve the problem before the Turkish Grand Prix.
"In other words, the internals were not affected," Chevrier told the Spanish newspaper AS, "and therefore it is not a fundamental failure and we can address that immediately.
He also ruled out suggestions that Alonso's driving may have contributed to the failure.
"Absolutely not," Chevrier answered. "Everything from Fernando's side was normal. It was simply a problem of reliability."

More evidence for my theory that they tweaked the hell out of the machine to make it go fast, knowing full well the engine might suffer a breakdown.

It could be true... if it was possible... That engine was on his last cycle, so it was not possible to do anything on it because of the regulations.

You'd be surprised what they still can change with the engine. Steve Matchett mentioned it during the Barcelona GP. They still spend millions to tweak things because of technicalities and loopholes in the regs.

The engine kabloom makes me think that part of the increased performance of FA's car could be attributed to Renault tweaking the engine a bit higher, more towards the red zone in some areas. Basically they were taking the risk of DNFing in return for a good show in Spain.

Spot on DD, exactly what I thought...

the engines been homologated they cant tweak it though they cant even muck around with the mapping to much now with the control ecu

Not so according to Steve Matchett - they spend countless hours and $$$ to improve the engines via loopholes. Besides, improvements regarding reliability and efficiency are still allowed while it is forbidden to change decisive components such as the engine block.

that is true but still pushing the limits of the engine is hard thing to do now with all the homologation, ecu and 19k rev limit.
i would think the engine blow up is more a faulty part than over pushing the engine limits.
