In Hungary Marussia tested some new heat shielding on the exhaust which will provide a small benefit. Retaining heat will help in the MGU-H harvesting process and better shielding will enable to team to run less cooling vents which in turn means less drag. The signs from Marussia were good and some people have estimated the gain to be equivalent to 15HP.

Unlike other engine suppliers, Ferrari do not allow customer teams to touch or change their supplied PU and drive trains. As part of the Ferrari package, teams get Ferrari engineers who do all that. It was the Ferrari engineers at Marussia who devised and implemented this - so a pat on the back for those lads

Good idea, means Ferrari can gain more. Also testing it on the Marussia first helps them gain an immediate advantage and I think it suits both parties. I guess we will see the covers on the Ferrari and maybe even Sauber at Spa.

A little more on the solution Ferrari are implementing at Spa. It will give a small power gain, there will of course be a weight penalty to offset some of the power gain.

Simply put, by insulating the exhaust you keep more heat inside. 2 benefits are derived:-
1) you improve the efficiency of the MGU-H harvest (more heat more energy can be harvested giving more power) and
2) less heat escaping/radiating from the exhaust means less cooling vents needed in the bodywork which decreases drag.

The article basically says that Ferrari had a solution (a paint/veneer) they wanted to use in Canada but Charlie wouldn't let them. So Ferrari changed their implementation (instead of paint, use tape) which was accepted by Charlie - it also happens to be the implementation method he approved for Mercedes. Ferrari tested it at Marussia and also at the Silverstone testing.

Very interesting - reports circulating that Marco Mattiacci has raised with Bernie and the team bosses a relaxation of the engine freeze rules.

I think the engine freeze this year is a bit strict when you think about it being the 1st year of the new rules. However on the other hand it is the same for everyone.

It being the same for everyone makes it "equal"; but,
the question remains, is it a "fair" rule?

If everyone agrees to the relaxation ......
#414615
If you where Mercedes would you agree to the relaxation of the rule?

Why wouldn't they if they feel also they've got a lot more of where "that" came from. Fundamentals can't really be changed much till next year because of the lack of testing. The biggest areas for improvement will be in the recovery units, the batteries and turbo. I'm sure the ICE is pretty close to peak since everyone has been making those a lot longer.

Why bother, they have that much of an advantage how do they know that someone could of out developed them in season.

It may make just as much sense for Mercedes as it does for Ferrari and Renault. Remember Honda is continuing their development. So if the rules were relaxed for all then they could all get some extra time to test new ideas and concepts for next year. It might advantage the 3 existing suppliers over Honda.
