Why didn't Mercedes pit Nico when it was obvious that Lewis was not going to let him past?

Good question. Or why didn't they pit him INSTEAD of asking Lewis to let him past?

Well I'm always banging on about Austria when Lewis lost his lap because his wheels went off the edge. But at Hokenheim it was fine to do that. Brundle was asking. Charlie why it was ok to do it at Hokenheim but not at Silveratone or Austria. He waffled on about turf, it's ok on one sort but not the other.....something like that. And Brundle asked why?why is it ok on one track but not the others? and Chatliesaid because you don't oh any faster by going over at Hokenheim. How do you work that out. Well said Charlie, some cars go over and they're no faster than others that stay in! What an exacting science. I nearly fell off my chair. So I concluded they just make it up to suit. And yes, we know exactly what would happen if Lewis' wheels went off in a race, seen all that before.

Faster or not if you're off the track you should be penalised, they wouldn't be going out there if it wasn't faster or safer or easier. It's an advantage.

The little Brundle Charlie interview was complete bs.

...An amazing drive from an ex world champion, after being let down by his team in qualifying that means he could not get into Q2 or Q2. Today he showed some amazing racer craft to bring his car home in the points. Well Done Kimi...

Totally agree!!

I agree too, fantastic seeing two world champions fighting it out for 6th and 7th place!

Yeah that was pretty fantastic, thanks for mentioning that as I completely forgot about it as there was too much going on at the front. I was very happy for Kimi and 6th was a great recovery drive from him, their car did look much better this weekend compared to previous ones

Great drives by the top three. I couldn't pick a best. They all benefited from the SC but made the most of it. Ricc and Alonso in terms of luck when they came in, and Hamilton in it bringing him back in the pack. RB really still have the strategy edge, which they showed so well before this year, and that it wasn't necessarily just the car. Ricc makes them work, Vettel doesn't. All the drivers suffered from the unusual conditions and tight track. I don't think anyone drove a bad race but made the most of how it panned out.

I found Mercs strategy strange in the second half of the race. They'd already watched their cars struggle in that intermediate/almost dry phase, then put Nico on two more stops and Hamilton on one. But Hamilton was never going to make the most of the pace in his tires because he wasn't going to both get past slower drivers because they were running more wing, and try to conserve his tires. We saw with Nico and Ricc that having the better tires at the end was going to be the best strategy. Red Bull called it very early and were confident in that. It's what gave Ricc the win. Merc either kept changing their minds with the Nico Lewis overtake situation to pull Nico in and/or split strategies to hedge their bets. It's like they got a bit muddled with having to worry about other teams.

I guess when you have a fast driver and the fastest car you don't need to think too much about strategy. You should be able to win from pole or get on the podium when you start at the back of the grid. Oh well.

In this constant quest to have a dig you always come up short in making an even vaguely decent point.

Ironically, they don't even need to hedge their bets...
they don't need to worry about other teams...
they don't even need to worry about their drivers...

Are they after some sort of record, because that might
explain their decisions today, no?

Yes kimi showed some amazing racer craft to complete the race without crashing and scrapping into the points while another ex world champion almost won the race in THE SAME CAR

Great stuff kimi thanks for keeping your car on the track

I felt today they did need to hedge their bets. After the first SC you know everything's not going to go to plan when you can't pass a Toro Rosso.

ooops... forgot about that, with all the action that was going on!!

I have just rewatched the race sitting still this time, and I have to say Nicos inability to pass Vergne, and his inability to not get overtaken by the Torro Rosso is a massive factor in his inability to win the race from pole in the fastest car. i have never seen that kind of going missing in action from Lewis although I have from Nico many times before this year

If both rewatch that race I reckon Nico will not enjoy the summer break as much as Lewis will
