Bell: Renault set for big step forward

By Jonathan Noble Monday, April 21st 2008, 10:41 GMT

Fernando Alonso, Renault, Barcelona test, April 2008Renault technical director Bob Bell believes that upgrades to the team's R28 should provide a 'big step forward' in pace for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, despite Fernando Alonso playing down the progress last week.

The former world champions will introduce a host of revisions to their car for Barcelona, including improved aerodynamics and new suspension components, which the team hope will lift their current form.

Although Alonso told Spanish media last week that he felt the developments were not enough to allow Renault to challenge the teams at the front of the grid, Bell is more optimistic about the speed improvements from the new parts.

"We are reasonably confident that the things we are putting on the car will produce a clear and definable performance advantage," Bell said on Monday.

"I think we will also see some more unquantifiable benefits with improvements to the driveability and feel of the car because if we give the drivers more confidence, particularly under braking, they can extract more performance from the car.

"So we can be reasonably confident that it will be a big step forward and that it will be multiple tenths of a second.

"We do have to be cautious, though, and remember that every team sees Barcelona as an opportunity to introduce a major upgrade - we just have to make sure that we take a bigger step than the other teams."

Bell said the focus of the improvements, which included a Red Bull-type extended engine cover, was in improving both high-speed and low-speed grip.

"We now have quite a clear picture of where we are under performing," he explained. "One of those areas is our aerodynamic performance because at the moment we are deficient in aero-generated grip in the high-speed corners. That's where we are making the biggest push because that area is probably contributing the most to our lack of performance.

"Equally, we are losing out in the low-speed corners where the performance of the car is dominated by mechanical grip, and so we have suspension upgrades that will start addressing those problems. We are also a bit down on engine performance and we can recognise a straight-line performance deficit compared with other teams. However, in the world of frozen engines there is not much we can do about that."

Alonso said at the start of the season the car would be rubbish, but the team said it would be setting the world alight; Alonso said last week the new parts weren't that good, but now Renault are saying they think they've taken a leap forward. I think Alonso is going to be proven right.

Yeah but renault has made up a few more tenths than other teams' tenths. Renault will be on the podium this year, at some time this year. Alonso wants to stay in Renault. I think that will be great because, if they won it before, they can win it again, since history tends to repeat itself.

i would love them to be challenging bmw and mclaren, but i dont think that is gonna happen :(

my realistic hope is for them to be in 4th at the end of the year ahead of the 'others'

im inclined to believe fa, he does give it to you straight alot of the time

[b]i would say bell is probably right in the fact they have gained a few tenths[/i] the problem is so has everyone else!

Well, of course. I meant relative to the other teams. Although the car may be improved, other teams with more resources than Renault, will also have been working away.

There are some interesting development races out there. McLaren v. BMW, both of them v. Ferrari, but also further down the field, for example, Williams. I can't wait for the Spanish Grand Prix - certainly not because of the track - but because I want to see how all of the teams have done.

Yes, Alonso has been quite frank about Renault's form this year. Maybe because he doesn't wish to add the extra pressure on himself and end up looking bad.

But for the sake of competition, hopefully Renault did make a decent step up; but the most reasonable hope is to improve 'just' enough to battle Williams and Toyota consistently and not poor enough to allow Honda, Red Bull and Force India stronger than them. So who knows, maybe they found Alonso's 6/10s

As for the top teams... difficult, as Alonso says. Mclaren, Ferrari and BMW seem to be way ahead, so unless they make driver mistakes or unlikely failures, they seem too strong to be contested.

Wishful thinking :P:lol:

Where there's a will, there's a way. Being permanently station in a team is very important for a driver and no one loves FA like the Renault team. So they have to prove their love by giving him a killer car.

Someone above talked about teams with more resources, does that mean that they are faster? like Toyota?

If Alonso stay's with Renault I would think they will be major contender's next year unless they find a dramatic enhancement that allow's them to leap forward this season. Just because I dont like Fernando I have never doubted his skill he is one of the best.

Hopefully Renault improve and get the car back near the front (i think it's too late to be winning again this year). Alonso deserves a good car because he ended the dominance of Michael Schumacher and fans of the sport will always be grateful. If Alonso was in the title race Massa would still have a lot of pressure on him because Alonso is one of the best overtakers in the business.

The Schumacher era had to come to an end at some point, I think Alonso was lucky to in the right car at the right time, I also think that Schumachers motivation was starting to wane slightly but wanted to go out on a high so kept going.
