The main tangible metrics correlating to marketability these days is ofcourse social media followers etc

Whoa...did someone say social media followers?

Mercedes AMG Petronas Official Page: 6,933,321 followers

Oldest team on the grid Official Page: 2,879,137 followers

Some clown who had made a fortune out of not being able to sing to his little Bieber fans has 52.6 Million twitter followers and just under 71 Million twitter fans.

I was just pointing out how in the big scheme of things how little twitter and Facebook fans really matter. How many followers does the Pope have? How does that translate to how many Catholics are there in the world?

The pope has 4.19m followers on twitter - compare this to Ashton Kutcher's 16.2m :yikes:
Does that mean there are 4 times as many Kutcherians than Catholics? :P

You can only compare like for like, its pointless to compare the popes followers to a teenybop star, almost as ridiculous as a beatle saying they were bigger than jesus. Its like saying the pope has more followers who pray on sunday than david icke does

you can however compare 2 F1 teams or 2 F1 drivers but not an f1 driver to a politician. Merc have twice the followers Ferrari have and a tenth the followers rihanna has - this doesnt mean rihanna can build a winning car

followers etc might seem like a fad that its easy for the older generation to apply a blanket dismissal to, but todays marketing currency is about followers of your brand. the more followers you have the more chance of raising some money somehow someday out of them, and as we know money talks and the rest walk

consider this

Twitter has the wealthiest users
Facebook has the oldest users
Digg has the best educated users
StumbleUpon is a haven for graphic designers

its not rocket science to work out that if you have 10 x more followers than the pope, you might not be an object of desire for the catholics out there, but you would be for marketeers - and here is the kicker, the popes function is not to sell merchandise (ok maybe debateable in a different context) in the way rihanna or ferrari are

and back to F1 - f1 has always existed to market goods, therefore the more the followers the bigger the brand, the bigger thepaycheck

why do you think there is always talk about danica getting an f1 seat?

So why is that repricom site putting Lewis 5 th on one list below Massa, Button, Alonso and Vettel? Do they not bother with the massive data available on social media? I'm just curious how they arrive at such a result.

If I have mentioned it before, please bear with me, for a moment.

There is NO way to know how many people have multiple social media accounts.
There is NO way to know if anyone with multiple accounts "likes" Hamilton with
each and every account (which would inflate numbers), any more than there is
any way to know if someone else votes for a different driver (Massa, Button,
Alonso and Vettel) with each account. There is NO way to know if all the "likes"
are from F1 fans or even if they know anything about F1, at all!

And, that's the basic flaw with social media: there is NO way to ensure the legitimacy of each "like".

However, having a sampling of 6 500 people in 13 different countries, is more legitimate.
In this type of survey, each person has probably been pre-selected using specific critieria
and, each person has only "one" vote. And, that's why so many organizations pay Repucom
for their product.

p.s. It's Repucom.

Yes just as reputable as Nielsen TV ratings. These types of polling systems are woefully antiquated and haven't really figured out how to account for the internet, mobile devices, and social media.
