I quite like this idea, at least it removes doing an extra 4 laps whilst we wait for lapped cars to catch up. Gives us more racing.

So like a normal current SC then?

From what I gather, that's still going to happen, just when the safety car goes in the cars line up on the grid for the standing start.

A bit on the fence about this one, initially! I understand that it would be one way of ensuring that there was more "racing", when there is a runaway leader, such as has happened this last few years; but, is that "fair"? I'm not arguing that it would be great if your driver/team is the one behind; but, what about the driver/team who has worked hard to build a lead? What's the point for them? Is it even fair to their fans? I can see that some of us will be hoping and praying for a Safety Car, if it's our particular driver/team that's behind.

So, the more I thought about it, the more this feels as contrived as the botched idea of flooding the tracks with water, just for the unpredictability of a wet track, let alone the idea of double points for the last race!!

Yeah, not so much.

As I posted in the Mia Scuderia lounge earlier, I have a concern about this rule. Imagine this scenario:

Alonso is 4th and Kimi is a lap down late into the race. Kimi "spins" into a dangerous area and stalls. SC out. Restart with 2/3 laps to go, Alonso gets a banzai to 1st and due to no DRS for 2 laps is able to hold on and win. Great for Alonso/Ferrari but not exactly fair. Imo it will encourage cheating and isnt something i'd like to see in F1

Funny you should have Alonso as the one who benefits from a team mates mishap bringing out the safety car, I think even as the rules are just now such cheating is a possibility and this change won't make that better or worse.

Graeme Lowdon has explained in an interview with Ted Kravitz that the SC restart rule is only an OPTION that Charlie Whiting has allowed and is NOT compulsory!

This makes it a bit better and hopefully Charlie Whiting will only use it at certain times - wouldnt mind a 2nd start say after a Lap 1 crash, but imo it should not be used after the first round of pitstops.

As I orignially posted that comment in the Ferrari lounge, I used the two Ferrari drivers as an example, and it is more likely Alonso would be the lead runner rather than Kimi...

I don't know how long you've been following F1 so don't know if you know this but Alonso was the one to benefit from just such cheating in Singapore in 2008, it was only uncovered when his team mate blew the whistle. i dont think this change would make any difference regarding how easy or difficult it would be to pull something like that off.

Oh yeah I do, but that isnt why I used him as the example, that is purely a coincidence. I am aware that Piquet was told to crash so Alonso's strategy would work etc... But while Alonso benefitted wasn't the tactic nothing to do with him (cant remember if he was aware or not but i have a feeling he wasnt, and im sure he wasnt involved in the creation of the plan either)

Alonso doesn't know anything?

His teammate crashes in a timely moment, he wins a race he had no chance of winning, his teammate gets fired few races later, his best friend in the team is Flavio (he was in Flavio's swimming pool playing ball for pete's sake), when the spy scandal came out we had 'Witness X" in the team issue a press gag order for his name not to be revealed in return for more info....

Alonso doesn't know anything?

Alonso came out clean, it was allegedly between Briatore and Piquet. My point being though, that this can happen with the way the rules currently stand so I don't see that as a reason to oppose this change, however, I don't really see anything wrong with the current rules that the change would fix so I don't see any point in it and it may bring 'first lap incidents' into the middle of a race.
