I did a search of the forum and could not find any mention of this news; could be a interesting twist in GP's from next season!

Formula 1 is set for standing starts from the grid following safety cars in 2015, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

Following discussions between teams about ways to improve the show, one idea that has gained momentum in recent weeks is to overhaul the way that races resume after caution periods.

There is a consensus that the current rolling restarts with the leader dictating the pace do not provide enough excitement.

Sources have revealed that during this week's F1 Commission meeting at Biggin Hill, a proposal to scrap the current format for 2015 and change it to grid starts after safety cars was approved.

The idea is that from next year, once lapped cars have been allowed to unlap themselves, cars will form up on the grid once a safety car period has ended.

There will then be the same procedure of a standing start as happens at the beginning of races.

The hope is that there will be more chance of positions changing, with the spectacle of a standing start producing more drama than rolling starts do.

The rule change still needs to be ratified at the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Munich next week, but this will be a formality now that the F1 Commission has backed it.

I love standing starts. I don't really fancy this idea though as there's an inherent risk in having a first turn incident from standing starts, so what if we end up seeing three or four standing starts a race? :hehe::hehe::hehe: That'd be quite the sight!

What's the point in having the safety car then? Just red flag and restart, safer and quicker for the marshals clearing up. Only advantage of lining up on the grid after safety car period would be that the engines wouldn't have to be restarted but is there still talk that cars will be able to start themselves coming in at some point?

Yeah I do agree that the Safety Car should be axed if these standing starts are introduced. What is the difference now between Red Flags and Safety Cars?

The differences I can think of are:

Cars will complete laps during safety car period.

Lapped cars will be able to unlap themselves, although that could still be made possible by passing through the pits or something.

Cars won't have to restart engines.

So you can be half a minute up the road, fluff a SC restart and end up 8th. Jesus. Next thing we know there'll be double points for the last race.

Exactly my thoughts. Just another new gimmick to add unpredictability...but how unfair will it be for a driver who's leading the race by a huge margin, and then thanks to an idiot somewhere in the pack called Maldonado, loses the race due to a faulty/burned clutch.

LOOOL. I do agree the more I look into it, the more I agree it is a gimmick because it is to be honest. These standing starts are not really required

Good point from Davidson on sky, there's often first lap incidents from the standing start and there could be more of that on the restarts.

Ted does it again, he reckons a red flag and restart would save fuel, wtf is he on?

He's high on engine fumes...the kind of engines that don't need spark plugs. :yikes:

Not fumes then, he's just buzzing unburnt petrol!

I like maldonado but LMFAO!!!!!!!!:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

That's a great point though. It'd really be ridiculous to risk undoing the work a driver has already done by having a second (or third, or fourth, etc.) standing start because they already made it through the first one successfully. Why put everybody through it again?
