...Much as I respect the brilliance of the engineers and designers , what hits the spot for me is seeing the best drivers make a difference, and this year they can, last year they couldn't so much. So though I prefer the loud sound, I more prefer seeing drivers wrestle the cars and do well by being a better drivers

But... without the their brilliance, the drivers wouldn't have the equipment with which to showcase their talent.
This year, at Mercedes (as it was the last few years at Red Bull), it's a win-win situation: great driver/great car.
Unless ALL the drivers are in the SAME/VERY SIMILAR car, there is no reasonable way to separate the two.
