It would nice to create history. Mercedes is on a trajectory that may be a long time in surpassing.

A comment on two points. .....
I think Ted Kravitz is pants.

WB, I like best your point number 7 .........
7-Today's F1 cars clearly showcase the better drivers.

Much as I respect the brilliance of the engineers and designers , what hits the spot for me is seeing the best drivers make a difference, and this year they can, last year they couldn't so much. So though I prefer the loud sound, I more prefer seeing drivers wrestle the cars and do well by being a better drivers

But... without the their brilliance, the drivers wouldn't have the equipment with which to showcase their talent.
This year, at Mercedes (as it was the last few years at Red Bull), it's a win-win situation: great driver/great car.
Unless ALL the drivers are in the SAME/VERY SIMILAR car, there is no reasonable way to separate the two.

What are you on about?

Why aren't Merc clamouring for Chilton then and saving themselves $20m?

We've seen enough great drivers (Alonso, Hamilton) not be competitive enough in cars that aren't up to snuff.
Then we've seen great cars (Red Bull) bring championships home with a good driver (Vettel).

Basically, it's a combination of elements, especially the driver and the car that will win titles.

Better?

Of course a good car is essential, but this year a driver can make more difference than he could last year. It can move a whole lot further in that direction as far as I'm concerned.

Toto Wolff: "It was an interesting day which threw up some surprising conclusions. One of our biggest jobs will be to analyse and understand why the option tyre didn't perform as well on our car in comparison to the prime and also how to manage graining on the option during the race. It is a short lap here, which closes up the field anyway, but it feels like Ferrari might be pushing us harder this weekend. We will need to get every detail right to deliver our potential in the race, so there's plenty of work still ahead of us this evening."

Paddy Lowe "Today we focused on doing our homework for the race, looking particularly at tyre performance and fuel consumption. This is one of the most challenging circuits of the season in terms of fuel consumption and how we best use the 100 kg race fuel allowance. The threat of rain meant we ran more laps than usual in the morning session, including some high fuel work, before a more normal afternoon of short and long runs on low and high fuel. The car ran fine but we seemed to struggle a little with the option tyre, which did not deliver as much lap time as we had expected. This may open up some interesting strategies for qualifying."

Maybe for the mid pack, but I hope Lewis will stick to the optimum strategy and pick the softer option to start the race with no matter what. Speed always wins when no other car is around the play with.
