Kovi must have been a hell of a talent to take Hamilton to the 08 crown, and the following year from an arse-end car to a winning one. Meanwhile in the same year Button
developed a half-second car into a midfield one. Which is where Ferrari would be without Alonso's 0.4.

It's strange how nobody talks about the midfield drivers developing cars. Nobody claimed the Hulk developed the FI into a potentially great little motor. That was only the technical boffins. Ricciardo is not getting kudos for developing the RB from a stinker in testing to the second best car - again only the technicians can take credit, because a mere Toro Rosso driver would never have the knack. Apparently the RB will only be a legitimately good car when/if Vettel gets his head around it, because, y'know, that's his thing.

Meanwhile Hamilton's been working on his music, because he's a bit of a thicky and can't do much else.

I even heard that he has an acoustic guitar because he cant get his head around electric guitars, with complicated things like amplifiers and volume switches

That is because I think you'll find the engineers do all the work...

Let's not kid ourselves, every driver in F1 works hard. But the terms "working hard" and "development" are very subjective. In the end you need two things.

1 to be able to drive the car under you to the. Dry edge of its capability.
2 to provide feedback on the feeling of the based on what the engineers have done.

The correct feedback substantiates CFD models, wind tunnel tests and engineering principles. Incorrect feedback skews the data and can have engineers going in a wrong direction.

If ""all"" they need is for the driver give feedback confirming what they ""already"" know,
what's the point of testing at all?

Because they may have two or three different pieces that they need to get real world data on as well as feedback from the driver. They don't go as fast in testing but they still test, right?

But, aren't all the pieces individually CFD designed?
If so, is it the combination of these pieces that need testing?
That can't be done on a computer?

((p.s. I strongly believe that technology should work for us, not the other way around.))

Computers don't give answers, they just compute based on the parameters you give them. All teams have multiple engineers saying their computer told them their part would be the best part to have on the car. Hence the real world testing.

Do the teams have differing philosophies on whether or not
they have "one" engineer that oversees all the others?

Or is part of what the Team Principal is responsible for?

I guess what I'm getting at is, how easy is it for there to be
too many cooks who spoil the broth?

I think the senior engineer role all depends on the skill sets of the team principle. Also you have to think that job titles are very blurred in F1.

Look at Mercedes with Toto and Paddy, you could say Red bull does the same with Horner and Newey just have different job titles.
