...the stone industry is about advanced as you see in the Flintstones, maybe not even that as we don't have dinosaurs to help out any more. It's seriously backwards and the H&S stuff is pretty useless and only to cover the employers backs.

I'm betting you probably make less (with inflation factored in) than Fred and Barnie!!
As far as H&S goes, lawsuits is all they worry about in any and all industries!!

A typical example, a kebab shop in a tenement block was being done up and some of the stone columns for support were being removed and steel beams put in to open up the front a bit. For temporary support while the work was being done I had to cut holes through the wall above where the beams were going and just below ceiling level. The walls were 600mm thick built of solid stone and I had to cut the holes by hand with a hammer and chisel. Every employer ive had working with stone is of the mind that not buying or hiring decent or correct equipment is saving money because we can make do with the old ways.

That must have taken a long time, by hand. And, although I realize that machinery has come a long way,
is your employer "only" concerned with the expense of buying necessary equipment, or is it about the
craftsmanship that can't always be replicated by technology?
