Wheels24-LONDON, England - Niki Lauda has hit out at Red Bull for dropping his name from a corner at the returning Austrian grand prix venue.

Now called the Red Bull Ring, the former A1-Ring was demolished and totally rebuilt by the energy drinks company, and next month it will host its first grand prix since 2003.

Prior to the Red Bull takeover, one of the corners at the A1-Ring was called the 'Niki Lauda Kurve', in honour of the Austrian great and triple World champion.

NAME CHANGE

Now, the same corner has been renamed 'Pirelli'. Also gone is the Gerhard Berger Kurve, replaced by Wurth, a German tool company.

"I'm very disappointed," Lauda told Kleine Zeitung newspaper.

"I can only presume it is because I am now at Mercedes and we are beating Red Bull," he added.

So far, the 'Jochen Rindt Kurve' - named after the posthumous 1970 World champion - has survived the Red Bull Ring's search for sponsor dollars.

But correspondent Gerald Pototschnig said even that corner could be renamed if a sponsor makes an attractive enough offer.

"As punishment," the angry Lauda said, "Mercedes will be happy to celebrate a one-two in Spielberg."

Not every word :nono: , just a fair few of them. 'Sometimes' my post commenced with, not 'always'

Somehow I doubt that Red Bull waited until Mercedes was leading the season to decide what to name these twists and turns.
There is mention of sponsorship money, which would make more sense!

Hopefully, Lauda's comments were taken out of context, otherwise, it would seem he suffers from a touch of egocentricity!

Again, the only thing worse than a sore loser is a sore winner!

Red Bull most likely didn't remove the names because Mercedes are winning, but they removed them non the less. Names that were bestowed as a thing of honour, to honour achievement. Fortunately their sense of proprietory stopped them short of removing Jochn Rint's corner. Sense of proprietry? Who am I kidding, they likely weighed up the money gain against the public backlash and decided removing a posthumous honour was a step too far.

What Lauda did was make sure everyone knew what they'd done .

Sore loser? He didn't win the name, he was awarded it for his achievements.

Now, now, I thought we'd established that there was something worse than a sore winner.

That Red Bull changed the name (as hallowed as it may be) really is up to them.
Do I think they should have? No! But, again, that's up to them.

Unfortunately, Lauda's comment put that choice in a different framework/context
and it really wasn't necessary for him to say it's because Mercedes is beating them.

Actually, you shared your opinion; but, that didn't change mine! :D

If they rebuilt the track, is it the same corner?
