The internet has a lot to do with the dislike of modern drivers. Prost and Senna didn't have all the keyboard warriors to contend with. It's not hard to imagine us bashing away at all those drivers like we do today, were the technology available. Back then I just seemed to watch the coverage and not give it a lot of thought inbetween races. Nowadays hating on Vettel is one of life's small pleasures.

I think Schumacher was hated on as much, if not more than, Vettel. So if Senna took his seat, then the question, IMHO, still stands.

Schumacher's success isn't the cause of the hate though, but the nature of it, and this was evident from very early on. He took Senna's ruthlessness and turned it into stupidity, like someone who doesn't quite understand the rules. He did that his whole career, it wasn't just youthful exuberance. By the time of his death Senna's career and personality were well known, and the man was revered despite his sometimes questionable tactical choices. He was singular and a man of his own philosophy, by which he lived and died. Schumacher and Vettel are company men, with great talent but too threatened by other people. I was no particular fan of Senna back in the day but his death was a very profound thing, and it's still one of the few things I wish had never happened in this world. Schumacher hitting his head on a rock is unfortunate, but I won't mourn his passing, whenever it may come.

To turn this thread on it's head; if Senna had lived; would we have the super high safety standards of today? That tragic weekend at Imola in 1994 spawned a whole raft of safety changes that have *probably* saved countless lives since, not just in F1, some of F1's safety innovations were carried over to other motorsports.

This.

Who else would of had to die to get those changes made? I dont think Ronald Ratzenburger's death alone would have forced so many changes. That has got to be the only good thing that came from both their deaths :(
