Sour grapes? Possibly! But, in the end, these teams/companies are involved in a VERY expensive endeavour.
Any one of us would do the same thing, just as you have mentioned and probably because of the ridiculous
amount of money on the table. Who wouldn't want to try to legitimately catch up and give any one ahead
a run for their money?
After the agony of defeat, success will be sweet!
It is sour grapes on the part of Ferrari and Red Bull, we see this time and time again in F1; and frankly it's tiresome! The truth is that if Renault or Ferrari were so far ahead like Mercedes are currently, I'd be willing to bet that Mercedes would be pushing for change or trying to get the (split turbo system, as used by Mercedes) design banned!
