Yeah, we knew about it before, but I guess now the engines are homologated the detailed spec is avaialible to the FIA, and hence to other teams

Great read. The Merc seems to have killed their opposition already and the works team just needs to carry through till the end, brilliant. :drink:

The thing with it is that the other power unit manufacturers could not copy it on "safety grounds"

I am sure Honda would have enough time to copy it as a concept

Makes the pool prediction tomorrow very tough for me. Nico looks more on song in sector 1 and 3 here though, Lewis with the edge in sector 2.

It's all a pitstop game for Merc tomorrow, heads or tails for winner.

Nico has the edge in S1 and Lewis has it in S2 and they seem equal in the last one.

Any of the manufacturers could copy it for next year, including Honda, but if they have already cast all the components and set up a production line for the machined parts like the block etc, it would be literally starting with a new production engine. Also you would have to be making all the ERS bits and piping etc in house and only Merc do this and maybe Honda.

Honda could have something close Im sure, but Merc were 3 years in making theirs and a lot of work would be involved with reaping the same benefits as Merc have.

Does anyone else think the tension has already slightly begun at Mercedes. :hehe:

This discussion is at the back end of the Ferrari thread but I don't want to affect any sensitive people there so, more on Toto Wolff here:

Wolff: F1 rule change ideas are "absurd"

After just two races, and approaching the third on Sunday in Bahrain, many criticisms have been aired, with one of the more high-profile dissenting voices being Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemolo.
The Italian has so far bemoaned the lack of noise, and has described F1 as being more akin to taxi-driving in that drivers are fuel-saving and coasting rather than going flat out.
Di Montezemolo is due to meet F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and FIA president Jean Todt at the Bahrain International Circuit ahead of the race to air his views and discuss potential proposals for change.
One of Di Montezemolo's more left-field ideas - one he has revisited after suggesting it back in September 2012 - is to makes the grands prix shorter.
There is perhaps a touch of sour grapes behind Di Montezemolo's thoughts as Ferrari, after spending the past four years being beaten by Red Bull, now find themselves significantly adrift of Mercedes.

The German manufacturer has so far won the opening two races, and, with Nico Rosberg on pole in Bahrain, have made it three in a row.
Defending his team's position, Wolff said: "We are only eight tenths (of a second) off pole from last year (clinched by Rosberg).
"Yet we have a car that is 25 per cent down on downforce, is using much harder tyres, is using 30 per cent less fuel, is heavier, yet has more power, more torque and greater straightline speed, so what are we talking about?
"We are in a brilliant technical revolution and here we are talking the sport down.
"In the UK there is a saying 'doing a Ratner'. Is it because we have an agenda? Somehow I don't get it."
Wolff was referring to Gerald Ratner, who once famously described the products in his jewellery stores as "crap" and ultimately went bust after £500million was wiped off his company's value on the back of that one remark.
The suggestion is Ferrari, backed by Red Bull, will push for change, yet a disappointed Wolff added: "If this is the agenda, we shouldn't totally talk the sport down.
"We should say 'Hold on a minute, Mercedes has done a better job, with their engine more efficient'.
"The rules are the rules, were implemented a long time ago, and if you want to change them then do it for next year, but I don't see that happening.
"There is a framework of technical and sporting regulations, and everybody is aware what they are and if you want to change things for next year you have to do it by June 30. This is the process.
"Some teams are saying they haven't been able to make their car efficient and fast with 100 kilograms (of fuel), so let's add 10 kilograms.
"Effectively they are saying 'Sorry, we didn't do our job in the way we should have done'. I find this whole discussion absurd."

Makes perfect sense. It's like setting a standard for a bunch of kids in class, and then finding out a few kids are a bit dyslexic so dumbing down the entire curriculum for everyone else to cater to the lower average. What a joke.

Hopefully Mercedes stand firm on this, I hate nothing more in F1 where a team wants the rules changed when it doesn't suit them.
2005 comes to mind where Ferrari got Redbull to vote in favour of going back to tyre changing instead of sticking with the one tyre per race rule. They got their wish for 2006!

Now the two are back in bed again!

It is sour grapes on the part of Ferrari and Red Bull, we see this time and time again in F1; and frankly it's tiresome! The truth is that if Renault or Ferrari were so far ahead like Mercedes are currently, I'd be willing to bet that Mercedes would be pushing for change or trying to get the (split turbo system, as used by Mercedes) design banned!

When has Mercedes whined or whinged like losers about anything and demanded rule changes? They have no history in regards to requests like this so your claim is unsubstantiated, on the other hand Ferrari are the perennial whiners while now they have the drinks company for support. Only the drinks company is smarter in actually benefiting from unfair rule changes while the perennial whiners just get even more f**ked after succeeding in the lobbying department.

Did anyone see the pre quali piece sky did on the Merc engine. It's so clever!! They've rethought the whole thing and they have like a tube thing going through the middle of the engine , for air I think; all the other engines have the air going round the outsides of it. And the red thing is in front of the engine( middle of the car, Not the back like the others. But it brings loads of other benefits too..narrower profile on the car, better weight distribution and I think there's more but can't remember.

I think they both want to win and both know who they have to beat to do that. But I think there it ends. Neither will enjoy the other one doing better, but so long as Merc play fair, and I think they will , I' m pretty certain the two drivers will.
