They're giving Mercedes something to worry about!! WoW!!

This sounds fairly conclusive
Well, IF these results are extrapolated throughout the whole season, Mercedes should worry.

This sounds conditional
NOT that I'm expecting that trend to continue

This sounds hypothetical

I was just a bit confused about your exact meaning, maybe all 3, which is not a problem, afterall we can all have several positions in a short space or time, or even all at the same time

"IF"... Then Mercedes wins a WDC and every race on the calendar making F1 history, and McLaren wins a WCC. I think they'd both be happy with that "IF".

Merc, if they are worried, like you said. If they extrapolate the first race results and realise it ends with a Merc WDC, according to you they would be worried AND happy at the same time

Well, IF these results are extrapolated throughout the whole season, Mercedes should worry.

Perez was brought in to complement Button, and we had 2 apparently smooth tyre whisperers for whom a radical front suspension would complement.

This fantasy has been completely erased from the history books

Ron Dennis believes Kevin Magnussen has what it takes to become the next Formula One world champion from McLaren.

Dennis, back in the paddock over the Australian Grand Prix weekend in his former role as McLaren Group chief executive, knows a thing or two about helping to turn a driver into a title winner.

After all, he has done it before with some of the greats of the sport in Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Lewis Hamilton.

So when Magnussen became the first rookie to step on to the podium at the end of the race at Melbourne’s Albert Park since Hamilton, Dennis was naturally probed about the 21-year-old’s credentials.

After finishing third behind winner Nico Rosberg in his Mercedes, the Dane was later elevated to second after Daniel Ricciardo was excluded from the result due to a fuel violation with his Red Bull.

For now, pending the outcome of an appeal from Red Bull and excluding F1’s first race in 1950 when all the drivers were debutants, Magnussen is only the fifth driver in F1 history to finish second or higher on debut.

Dennis, instrumental last season in the decision to axe Sergio Perez and push for rookie Magnussen to take up the seat, said: “It is a big step to commit to a driver and put him in a grand prix car. No matter his form, there is a risk.

“But I don’t think there is any question he has delivered more than expected, mainly because of his aptitude and not making mistakes.

“He couldn’t have done a better job. He never put a wheel off the track, followed all the instructions, and pushed very hard at the right times. I have nothing but praise for him.

“To finish where he did in his first grand prix, with the complexity of the regulations, and after a challenging qualifying in wet and dry conditions, who could ask for more?

“He has justified the selection process. It’s tough to make those decisions because you could always be wrong, but this one was right.”

Asked as to Magnussen’s title credentials, Dennis added: “He has all the ingredients necessary to win a world championship, although he has to be in a competitive car.

“It’s only one race and we’ll see where he is after four, but I don’t have any concerns about his temperament, focus or commitment, and he is prepared to make whatever sacrifices are necessary.”

What's Burning didn't suggest which driver might win the WDC nor which driver would win each race,
thus extrapolation of that first race isn't necessary, is it?

You know, both Hamilton and Rosberg could alternate winning a race/getting a podium and not scoring
points to win the WDC; whilst, Button and Magnussen could score good points in each race, for the WCC.
I'm sure with your analytical mind, you could come up with myriad combinations where that would be
possible, so I'll leave it to you!

n.b. I did NOT mention DNFs of any sort for Mercedes, just podiums and no points!

If the results of the first race are extrapolated Rosberg wins the WDC and McLaren wins the WCC. You said if results are extrapolated Merc should worry then said they would be happy with the extrapolation

Its no big deal, just trying to understand the point, apart from an ill judged and amateurish swipe at Merc and lewis

You're generalizing a comment I made in one situation and applying it to a different situation.

Some of Jenson Button's comments about McLaren's form were somewhat downbeat before Melbourne. However, after the race, he was willing to admit the obvious:

http://www.f1times.co.uk/news/display/08666

Jenson Button is certain that McLaren have turned a corner when compared to last year and holds hope that their upgrades will push them forward.

The team failed to score a single podium in 2013, but have already taken a second and third in the opening race of the season to take control of the Constructors' Championship by eight points. "Australia was a really motivational race for the entire team – even though we still have work to do, it feels like we've turned a corner, and that we have a racecar we can definitely work with this year," said the Briton ahead of the Malaysian GP.

"It's important that we keep pushing hard on the development front – we brought some useful upgrades to Melbourne, and it was encouraging that they worked straight out of the box, but it's essential that we keep pushing new items through the development pipeline, especially at these flyaway races, where it's harder to bring new parts to the circuit."

Racing director Eric Boullier promises the team will take an "aggressive" approach to developing their MP4-29 and says they've already got some positive developments in the pipeline.

"The aim for Malaysia will be to consolidate the position we currently have: we need to close the gap to the front, and we'll be pushing aggressively on the development front to ensure that the upgrades we bring to this race do just that. "Equally, back at MTC, we're pushing hard to ensure that the supply chain from factory to track is further refined: ours is a battle of constant development; and while we've seen one team emerge at the front, it’ll be the constant, iterative developments that will upset the order. "We've got some productive programmes in the windtunnel, and our aim now is to turn these projects to reality as soon as we possibly can – this is where the championship fight will be won or lost."

"We're finding it tough out there today especially in the heat," Button told reporters behind the McLaren garage where track temperatures peaked at more than 50 Celsius.

"We're not as strong as we'd like to be in high-speed corners and, when you have downforce issues, they're further amplified by the hot weather.

"So our long runs were tricky in terms of both tyre degradation and outright pace," said Button.

"The upgrades we brought here seem to be giving us something so that's encouraging but there's a lot of work still to be done."

I was wondering if the upgrades were a waste. Found this.

McLaren announce new tech director - Gordon Murray according to the Judge

This guy is part of the fabric of F1 history and had more tricks up his sleeve than Newey and Brawn together (Fan car for example)

Obviously this is an April fools joke as the guy must be 100 years old by now :hehe:

A thought occurred to me while having a discussion elsewhere. We know McLaren had a very difficult season last year. Different people, different perspectives as to the reason/s why. I'm of the personal belief that having Hamilton last year would have netted them markedly better overall results.

My point of discussion is this; There's the obvious difficulty in bagging a title sponsor that will pay the dollar amount McLaren is looking for. You can look at it from a purely business sense and say that the worst season in 33 years is a factor, but here's where I think the loss of Hamilton was a double whammy, as his marketability has to be a contributing factor in perceived value of a title sponsorship deal.

Your theory can now said to be factually correct

“There is only one Ferrari team, period,” he said. “We were interested in being with McLaren still because we have a bank in England, but it was a small sponsorship.
“When [Lewis] Hamilton was there it was justified. [Jenson] Button is a great driver, but it’s another matter,” Botin explained.
