Had another reply from Merc on twitter.....really getting my feet under the table now

Don't know if that's a Brit saying or not, I'm more familiar with the toe in the door comment. Foot under the table is more like, you know, something dirty.

Toe in the door? You mean foot in the door, a toe wouldn't stop a determined door closer.

You haven't met my almighty toe though.

Basically Merc have ripped the arse out of the new regs and have produced a monster engine capable of 900+ BHP yet consuming 100 units of fuel per hour

For the rest of the year Ferrari and Renault who are not able to produce as much power for the fuel flow rate will have to bite hard on the pillow and take it every single race as Merc AMG with their chassis with its superior mechanical grip and integrated and optimised braking/traction/economical/super efficient complimentary systems ride rough and hard over their bottoms and can even turn down the power and still beat those cheating by using more fuel per hour or those who have disappeared up their own exhaust with fancy cylinder shut down mechanisms for conserving fuel for a power unit that doesnt actually produce enough power in the first place

Before Honda comes back in, can Mercedes manage to oust their "we won ALL but one!" record this year? Time will tell.

I didn't know Honda ever had such a record?

Even Ferrari in the dominant MS/Todt era never whitewashed a season like McLaren did with Senna and Prost. And for many that is still one of the best seasons ever. Much better than the RBR Seb seasons and much better than the Ferrari MS seasons. Yet McLaren won every single race bar one that year

The difference?

At McLaren you had 2 top drivers allowed to race, and at Ferrari and RBR you had the 'one man and his dog' system

So this year at Merc promises to be very exciting indeed as Merc could whitewash the whole season yet produce a great competition

Thats a racing team that thinks about its audience and not just itself

Absolutely. A real racing team dominating the sport can only do it good.

Good to see Wolff has finally increased his expectations a tiny bit after his off-season "Merc not ready to win titles yet"

Losing 2014 titles would be 'failure' - Wolff

Toto Wolff is adamant that anything less than securing the drivers' and constructors' titles this season would be a disaster for Mercedes.

Nico Rosberg was in a race of his own in Melbourne, but the early retirement of Lewis Hamilton meant Mercedes did not fully capitalise on his pole position. Only Williams seems to have a car capable of challenging the Mercedes currently and Wolff admits Mercedes cannot to let its rivals back into the game.

"Yes, absolutely," Wolff said, when asked whether not winning both championships would be seen as a failure. "I don't see that we have a big advantage, to be honest, because you can see if you have a DNF then you lose points, and McLaren are leading the constructors' championship. Yes, we have a little bit of a margin and losing that would be something I'd consider as a failure."

Despite his determination to keep Mercedes in its current position at the top of the pile, Wolff is under no illusions that it will be difficult to maintain such a clear advantage.

"We have a margin performance-wise, but it's not an awful lot. If you look at where Red Bull have come from after very little mileage in testing, that is quite a wake-up call for everybody. Look at where they were two or three weeks ago in Bahrain, so we need to be very careful, and we haven't seen Sebastian [Vettel] running with a reliable, fast car.

"You would expect him, with his experience, to go even faster so we have to keep on pushing. At Williams, if you look at Valtteri's [Bottas] pace before he hit the wall, and again afterwards, then I'm quite sure they would have ended up on the podium. So I don't think you can ever lean back and say 'this is a comfortable buffer'."

After the first race, losing titles = failure. Daimler is listening, so these guys know what they have to do.

They know the performance advantage they really have, and Daimler know as well because Daimlers Merc technology center is where the turbo and ERS really comes from not Ilmore

They are just playing games with the others now, as soon as any of the others think they are catching up to Merc, they will get a surprise as the goal post suddenly shifts

When you have Nico leading the race and pulling 2 sec gaps at will and then asking what he can do MORE to help reliability then there can be no excuses. Lauda saying the other day they had 640 BHP for example is all part of keeping the rest aiming for targets that are pointless.

Can any one doubt that if there were no SCs and Merc had gone for showboating in AUS Nico wouldnt have lapped the field twice - like Horner said

Did Merc put out a statement on what actually was wrong with Lewis' car? Was it a bad coil?
