That is the headline for the season. We will see the pure drivers rising to the top, thankfully. V18 engine, or 125cc kart, it really doesn't change the level of excitement does it? It was the best qualy session I can remember in years. It really takes skill to drive these cars fast and the qualifying results show it. Props to Kobayahi as well!

Mag beats Button, Ricciardo with an inspired drive, wiped the floor with a four time world champion. Who knows what the explanation to it can be other than maybe someone really really misses a finely tuned blown rear.

@Spanky, I know you've been down about the new regs but you cannot tell me that you didn't enjoy this qualifying session.

BTW did anyone notice Ron beaming every time Mag put up a good lap? We know where the team is headed.

I'm pretty certain that Q1 times for Merc were set on the hard compound, with a bunch of other teams, including Ferrari going out on Softs.

+1! Love the car control involved even on a dry track. It makes me feel I might not be good enough after all for F1.

Yup Q1 for the Mercs on the prime everyone else bar STR I think on options. Then the rain came down and it got closer. The Mercs are at least a second and a half, if not 2 ahead of the closest car in the dry I reckon. The rain flattered RBR with its downforce and Ricc had the skills to make use.

Merc are around 1.5-1.8 secs faster on one lap pace compared to the rest in the dry, no question.

I did enjoy the qualifying - the rain spiced it up nicely. I was a little disappointed Seb had a problem as I would have liked to see what he could have done. As an Aussie from Perth I was over the moon with Dan's performance and hope he can convert that into good points tomorrow.

But for me, qualifying is the excess froth on your beer - tomorrow is the first time we will get to judge the new rules and the performance of the cars and whether drivers will be able to race from light out to the chequered flag.

Why would McLaren back Button, a driver, with a year or two, max. left in him?

When it was Mika and DC...DC was treated like some lackey and Mika like McLarens son.

DC and Kimi, DC still lackey, Kimi McLarens new son.

JPM and Kimi, I think RD was still very much on Kimi's side but was more impartial through this one

Lewis and Alonso, RD openly showing support to both until Alonso threw his team into the fire

I'm looking forward to the mid-field battle this race. Obviously the front is going to be won by one of the two mercs just driving away from the rest of the field; hopefully it won't be as bad as the latter part of 2013 but....Yeah....
