Rosberg is first man of the week under 1.34. He posted a time of 1.33.662

Edit: 1.33.2 now, and 17 laps done.

.... meanwhile, back at the racing ....

I keep hoping these cars are somehow going to prove we are not going to make another quantum step backwards in performance. Ten years ago we were a hair away from running in the 20-somethings. Last year on hards and mediums we were doing low 32's. Now we are running on softs and supersofts and we are in the 34's. Plus, this is a track where you spend most of the time on full throttle so, in theory, it should favor the high torque, wide bandwidth, extra geared cars. :irked:

Are you assuming they're cranked to the max? A regular race weekend can see free practice and quali times be seconds apart. For me, these times indicate that we'll be seeing faster cars with better racing than at any time in the last decade. They'll just sound rubbish (and even then a whole flock of them might create a nice noise, we just don't know yet). You also seem to live in some mythical world where racing of yesteryear was a no holds barred crack at maximising limitless regs, and it's only the MAN who's holding them back now.

And I bet they're just scratching the surface. Brilliant so far.

Laps by engine manufactures

Mercedes 93

Ferrari 20

Renault 13

Might be a bit out of date already.

It's not fair to compare Merc with the others since they have 4 teams running for them. By this stage, laps by individual teams might be more relevant IMO.

Like I said yesterday Button seems to be at the McLarens limit on the super softs. Assuming his teammate can get an extra half sec out of it, that's still 1.2 behind Rosberg on mediums, assuming mediums are 1 - 1.5 slower than ss
Then we can safely say last years speeds are history and this years title will be powered by a Merc

Still it's only testing, need to see more from Ferrari

I think you may be missing some info

The Mercs have destroyed the field, testing or no testing, no one will be within a second or two of them in Aus

Button already said even in lowest fuel trim he couldn't beat at time almost 2 seconds slower than what Arosberg has done (adjusted for tyres). Even if Maggieson can shave a second off McLaren seem to have shown their full hand

And Ferrari are not even at McLaren level

Lewis vs Nico this year as they lap the field 3 or 4 times each race

(But it's only testing, maybe someone is sandbagging still)

I'd agree with most of this but Ferrari is almost deceptively slow. I can't believe them not being at McLaren level at least, they might be hiding something you never know. Still have my bets on them to cause the first technical controversy of 2014. :hehe:

They are leaving it a bit late to test this secret 'hand'
You would expect to see more by now, they cannot be hiding 3 seconds of RELIABLE performance

I think it's ridiculous to compare an engine that has two road tests under its belt to times set by cars with engines that had years of development.

There is a replacement for displacement and it's called forced induction!

Well I don't think the Merc boys have really let rip yet. Merc tweeted that this afternoon they just want laps under their belt. Laps, laps, laps.....'we love laps' they said.

I think that would be the case for both Mercedes and Ferrari. If you are confident of your speed potential, concentrate on reliability. You learn more from getting in the mileage, save the pace for when it matters.

Ferrari are definitely behind Merc at present,

Envoy Autosprint in Sakhir (Bahrain) - Alberto Antonini

Now admit it, half-heartedly, even at the box Ferrari . driven Mercedes teams are in the lead. If you corrected now, maybe the F14 T could beat Williams and Force India , but against McLaren and especially Mercedes GP would be really tough.

This guys is saying the Ferrari garage admit they would come third if the race was tomorrow

Maybe not enough that cant be clawed back once they get everything going, but apparently driveability problems so far, its not as good round the corners as the Merc, listen to this from 2.20 in
