I'm not familiar with Ferrari's line of road cars, but utilizing a road version of the V-6 Turbo in a car sized and priced along the lines of the Ferrari Dino of old would be interesting. And how about a 2014 version of the Fiat Dino Spyder (and coupe), using the same engine? I'd even start buying lottery tickets!!!

It seems that Ferrari have solved their wind tunnel problems.

Good for them...though maybe slightly late since we're now in the engine era. :P

It took the greatest team in F1 only three years to overcome their wind tunnel issues? Come on Ferrari, we need you at a strong level to make a competitive season. Red Bull has had it their way for too long. :)

GPToday Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that he introduced the much-maligned rule to award double points for the last race of the season to help Ferrari catch up with its rivals according to an article in the City A.M. newspaper by Christian Sylt.

Last year Ferrari finished in third place whilst Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel wrapped up the title three races before the end of the season. Vettel has won the championship for the past four years running and has been one of the biggest critics of the double points rule.

F1 personalities and fans criticised it from the moment it was first announced in December. Vettel said it is "absurd and punishes those who have worked hard for a whole season" whilst Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo told reporters that he is "not enthusiastic. For me it looks too much artificial."

However, Ecclestone says that di Montezemolo "has not been against double points actually but he was talking about it and I said 'let me just tell you something. It is very simple why we got that. It is because you aren't performing. I said 'if you were doing what you should be doing there wouldn't be any need for it.' He said 'I know, I know, I know.'"

Lol that's embarrassing. But I don't get the hoo haa, if it's a double points rule, you get double points for 1-10th placed cars anyway. Sure the gap between each place is bigger but the teams will account for it and prepare themselves differently. A reliable car will have the same chance of a DNF in any race no matter the points. Unless they're counting on the WDC leader to crack (aka Vettel 2012) at the last race, but what if the WDC leader this year isn't Vettel? :groucho:

some cars are good on cirtain tracks. so aren't the double points slightly advantageous.

Back when Ferrari ran their engine in the LaFerrari mule, I commented on what appeared to me to be a striking silence as the car was cornering. this article at Omnicorse.it describes two initiatives from Ferrari's engine team.

The first talks about how the team cuts off fuel to the engine as they go off throttle - yet they still manage to lube and cool the piston chamber without the flow of fuel. This would be a significant fuel saving and very difficult to copy.

The second is to do with the use of the exhaust and getting "free" power (outside the 33 second allocation) by dropping the engine below 7K and using the turbo ERS-H, bypassing the batteries and directly powering the ERS-K unit.

These are unsubstantiated and pure speculation at this stage. There was definitely something in terms of sound when off throttle when they ran the engine in the LaFerrari mule. Also there is clearly a different sound that the Ferrari engine has on downshift/off throttle that everyone confirmed at Jerez testing. So something is going on there, but exactly what??

These sound theoretically interesting and I am sure every engineer has considered them. even some road hybrid cars cut fuel flow when off throttle. The challenge will be the massive strain on reliability for implementing such a system in concert with the ERS units.

Also it could be a detriment to quali sessions when there is no need for fuel efficiency. Its good to have positive news coming out of Ferrari away from seeing their effects on track as we will in Bharain. Merc on the other hand appear much more reluctant to talk about any of their innovations or power or efficiency solutions. Good thing is taht we will have a real competition amongst the 2 engines before homologation.
