Given the precedent set last year, I guess the FiA would be obliged to change rules to enable both Renault and Red Bull to race safely.

No safer place than sitting in the garage.

No mate, I still believe this is the most ridiculous rule. It is proving counter productive for its intended (albeit misguided) purpose and is adding unnecessary dangers for drivers.

Also I'd have to agree with allowing Red Bull and Renault additional test time and rule changes to enable them to race because that was the precedent set last year. All would have been unnecessary if the ridiculous testing and practice ban was not in place.

I find it funny how so many are now saying Renault will bounce back, and RBR will bounce back. Why?
Because Renault built a good engine in the past? The last one started under powered and had to have special leave to catch up with the others.

But its now fashionable to say 'dont dare write off RBR, or Renault', its early still.

Now i am not saying they will not get better, and might even be competitive soon, I am saying the other 2 have a head start in a season thats gonna evolve very quickly

Really? I'd think it's making a mockery of the rules if they allowed that. The other manufacturers spent time and money to get their sh*t together in time, are the FIA going to refund them the money and effort? Don't think so.

Redbull and Renault have paid to take part in the 2014 season, worst case scenario if they can't even make laps during the race they have the choice to sit in the pits and watch Indianapolis 2005 style (though this is an unlikely scenario). Everyone agreed to the rules and made the effort to do what's necessary, if some people got it so wrong it can't be put on the shoulders of the rest.

Rosberg's a real workhorse, he could easily hit 200 laps in Jerez alone!

He has done 45 laps already in 2 hours, and even on a long 22 run stint is over a second faster than Ferrari fast times. And his fast lap is 2 secs wuicker than Ferrari and .8 quicker than McLaren

Merc are only today turning the power up, they havent so far, its possible McLaren had theirs on highest mode so far

My thought here is not based on what's fair, its based on precedent. Last year the precedent was set to change the rules and add testing for teams that could not design a car to the original specs and rules.

The power up / power down doesn't really do anything to their data they can easily work it all out. It's also a good test for the engine to turn the engine up in the wet to get temperatures and everything, we all know the engine will be performing better in the wet (cooler) conditions.

So far testing has been very different for SF this year compared to previous years. Previously the team wanted to pound out as many laps as possible. They certainly have a very different program to other teams, not even a hint of a long run, but changing lots of major car parts - diffusors all with very specific aero runs. It's almost like they run enough to validate what they expect then move on.

10:33 Alonso heads out. Ferrari seems to be following quite a different programme to the Mercedes teams, but it would be nice to see what laptime he could do.
