The McLaren seems to have some pace alright. Kevin the kid has just put a record time for 2014 machines. And by a margin.

Not when making the quick laps at least... But it seems they're the only team which has brought some updates and bolting on new pieces, everyone else are running bare minimum and putting the laps in. McLaren might already be confident in their drive train and trying to make an early development jump, maybe?

Total laps thus far by team:

TOTAL LAPS/Team combined : Mercedes (177), Ferrari (136), McLaren (135), Sauber (94), Williams (89), F.India (65), STR (45), Caterham (22), RBR (14), Marussia (5)

RBR (14). Chuckle.

Marussia turned up 2 days late and only ran for the last few hours and have almost done half the laps Red Bull have.

Double chuckle then.

Not bad for McLaren, considering they lost an entire day.

The thing is, we saw this last year with them (only to find out they had built the car wrong)

Also when cars turn up like this it does one of two ways. BrawnGP or Prost (the final year)

And as McLaren have only done short runs on maybe low fuel.

I am happy to see McLaren potentially competitive. Its obvious this is now a team thats proactive about going forward. My only concern about getting too excited about the times is that, like Jabs mentioned, teams that normally make a point of short runs to get good times are normally after a Sponsor more than carefully introducing their full suite of toys and parts. Prost and Brawn both needed sponsors, although with Brawn they also had the fastest car.

Mclarens trick rear should have been rolled out after the first test, once they had ironed out reliability etc. They turned up with 2 rear suspension solutions, why show their hand now unless its about headline times. Merc for example are only now starting to look at aero correlations and add toys.

Anyway I suspected it would be Merc vs Force India, it would be even better to have Macca in the mix especially as its clear already that Magnus is more of a Mc driver than the other guy

It's one thing to look good at lap times in testing, it's another be good in a competitive GP weekend.

Still, it looks like some teams have more issues than others, but I guess it's hard to tell at this stage, I don't think it follows that as one team has issues at the start of testing - they will have a relatively poor car at the first race, or throughout the season, problems that look bad might be masking a good car underneath and could be solved pretty quickly, a car that looks solid and reliable - may have an area that can't be developed as much (relatively) throughout the season, or just lack real cutting edge race pace.

The racing adage is that it's easier to make a fast car reliable than to make a reliable car fast.

I think McLaren has been in the game long enough to know topping testing is not going to get you a title sponsor by the first race.
Race results will only help with that.

Testing is that, testing. Everyone's doing their own thing so lap times mean little.
