What they're saying is a maximum of 4 megajoules is what can be sent to the MGU-K and power to the drivetrain can only come from the MGU-K and even though the MGU-H can harvest unlimited engergy, it would have to be discharged elsewhere and not additional power for the drivetrain.

I had previously read that there was no actual time limit set, but that the power available would amount to 32~33 seconds of 160 additional horse power per lap as opposed to ERS that was only available for a total of 6 seconds per lap last year.

From what I thought, and I could be wrong, the MGU-H energy from the turbo is to supplement the drive at all times and isn't stored anywhere, and the MGU-K energy is stored in the batteries to be used in the way KERS was previously but with different limits.

So we have our first controversy of the season. Renault and Mercedes are lined up against Ferrari on engine design. Something to do with shielding for the turbo and its associated weight (~3-4Kgs) and where it is counted. Seems Ferrari are being creative in rule interpretation - finally. I'm sure there will end up with plenty written about this and lots of opinions, but I sincerely hope that Ferrari have done a "Red Bull" and found a chink in the rules to gain an advantage from.

As I understand it, nothing is decided yet, a meeting is scheduled with the FiA.

Oh man if Renault and Merc have a strong case about this, Ferrari are f**ked this close to the season opening.

But we always knew Ferrari hAve really pushed the boat out with exotic materials and other things. I am sure they will have plan b's for each 'test of the fia's resolve'
This is what we want brave interpretations from all teams and makers not just RBR

I'm pretty sure they've all gone out of their way to do fancy materials etc.

How do Renault and Mercedes know what is on the Ferrari engine?

Sent using NCC-1701

They would know what was discussed in the technical meetings. Most likely Ferrari have determined that if they have read the rules and found something to exploit then they would want it confirmed with enough time for them to go to plan B if it is not OK'd and not enough time for the other engine manufacturers to copy if it is OK'd. Most likely Ferrari probably chose this time to let the other teams know about.
