Lewis Hamilton in BahrainLewis Hamilton reckons his McLaren was capable of pole position in Bahrain, after the world championship leader was outqualified to the top spot by BMW's Robert Kubica and Ferrari's Felipe Massa on Saturday.

Hamilton, who showed no ill-effects from his practice shunt that required McLaren to rebuild his car around the team's spare tub, said that while his lap was good enough for the inside of the second row, it could have been better.

"For sure it was a decent lap but I am sure as always there is time to gain," he said.

"Inevitably if it was a perfect lap I think we could have had pole but we will go back and study it and look forward to the race, I think we have a good strategy for the race and tomorrow will be quite interesting."

Hamilton added that while he had noted the pace of the Ferraris, he was always confident McLaren could compete with them.

"They seem to have outstanding pace at the moment, but in qualifying I was happy with the balance we had and knew we would be able to challenge at least for the front row," he said.

The Briton also brushed off any suggestion of lingering thoughts from his free practice shunt.

"For me, it was easy to get back in car and go faster," he said. "Today I went quicker through that corner on the first lap than yesterday, it was important to really knock down that barrier and bounce back.

"I never have a problem with that, I have had plenty of experiences like that in my career."

Hmm. I'm not sure I follow Hamilton's logic. Surely other drivers didn't get the perfect lap together as well and could have gone faster, i.e. Kubica and Massa both. I do think McLaren are running heavier than Massa and Kubica, so, whilst a win will be tough, I feel McLaren can get a 2-3 finish.

LH will have a tough year this season, and I mean tough! Being among the favorites now puts him under some considerable pressure to always perform at max level. HK gives him a run for his money (who knew? :P ), now BMW Sauber is competing for podium points, taking them away from him when he has a less than stellar performance on certain race tracks. And of course, Ferrari still being the team to beat with in theory a substantial advantage over their competition in race trim and once their reliability issues are resolved. LH will have to learn to eat crow this year...

Whoever said it was going to be easy???? Lewis certainly didnt! He has a good team mate (I said that as well-though i maintained Lewis would have the edge). The ferraris are both strong(when Massa is on song) and the BMW are getting in the mix with Kubica as one of their drivers. Lewis cited Kubica as his toughest potential rival last year and he reiterated it recently. So only a fool would be under any illusions that it is going to be easy. Looks as though its going to be exciting though :D

Nobody said anything about easy, or did we?

I thought it was implicit in your post that you thought Hamilton had been expecting it to be easy and would be in for a shock.

and there will be no pressure on Ferrari and Kimi? your tone suggests that Ferrari are going to cake walk it and BMW are not going to be a problem for Ferrari and only for McLaren :o

no one says anything when Massa outpaces Kimi yet its always about McLaren and their drivers whether it be team orders or no passion or what ever else everyone on here likes to talk about in regards to McLaren and its drivers

you missed where i said your tone suggests BMW wont trouble Ferrari....
#38807
No I didn't - my post was from LH's perspective, so BMW Sauber (that's their official name!) threatening Ferrari doesn't have anything to do with it.
#38809
Yes they do well and they drop the Sauber name  even on the F1 website they have it listed on the constructor table as BMW
i remember when BMW first launched and the team still had Sauber as their name many said in the media it was to cover BMWs butt incase of bad performance

Of course pole was possible for lewis: if the Ferrari crashed. And the BMW's crashed. And Lewis was given some kind words by Ron while he was driving like "come on son you can do it" so his motivation remained high:D ". The fact is the Mclaren was off the pace in Bahrain and only if something went really wrong in the other cars he would have taken pole
