Michael was reported to have been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, however a rescuer who arrived at the scene stated that it split upon impact; "When we came to the scene, his helmet was split. You could see a lot of blood."

Dumb question of the day:
Did the helmet split because of the force of impact or because it wasn't made properly?

((p.s. NEITHER answer is good, eh?? :( ))

You'd assume Michael's got the cash to spring for a quality helmet. Just shows the speed he was going at...a risk he took which didn't pay off.

Great article by DC.

My fav line: "The awful thing is that so often it takes something like this before we say what we truly feel about someone."

It's what I'm sick of seeing...all the praise and love people give to celebrities once they die/get seriously injured but when they were alive they get berated to the ground. (Michael Jackson being a prime example) But I guess that's human nature.

Completely agree with you!! With each point, in fact!!

Coulthard brought tears to my eyes with a number of his comments and insights.
That he wrote this is a true testament of him as a man.

LOVE Michael Jackson and felt really sorry for him, for most of his adult life. What
a lonely place he must have been in, those last few years, without someone to trust
implicitly!! Luckily he had his children to love unconditionally!! With all the pettiness
and jealousy and envy human nature has the capacity to nurture, is it any wonder he
preferred the company of children who are genuine?

I guess most "speed" sports carry a calculated risk.
Then again, crossing the street against the red light
is also a calculated risk, with the potential for harm.

Well we take risks everyday and some risks don't pay off, bottom line being every person is always responsible for their own destiny.

The BBC is reporting that a second surgery was necessary:

staff wrote:">Schumacher's condition improves

...An initial scan on Monday night showed "an improved situation" and indicated a window of opportunity for a second operation, doctors said.

The family took the "difficult decision" to give consent for the procedure, and doctors operated on Schumacher for about two hours.

A subsequent scan revealed a "slight improvement".

"We can't say he is out of danger but... we have gained a bit of time,'' said Dr Jean-Francois Payen. "The coming hours are crucial."

"But all the family is very much aware that his state is still sensitive and anything can happen."...

The French have no qualms about reporting spurious rumours even at a time like this. It was a French paper reported rumours about a second operation the first night. They have no shame so hopefully the other rumour - that he is better is true

I think what it's saying is like or dislike Michael Schumacher the racing driver, When something like this happens everyone desperately wants Michael Schumacher the person to get through. He was not my favourite driver, especially first time round, but I hope with all my heart he pulls through this.

...'Catapulted onto his head'

His manager, Sabine Kehm, recounted more details Tuesday of how the accident happened, gleaned from friends and family members who were present at the time.

The party was skiing in an area of deep snow when Schumacher helped a friend who had fallen, she said. As he set off again and went to make a turn, he seems to have hit a rock hidden under the snow.

This catapulted him into the air and he fell head down with all his weight onto another rock, she said, resulting in severe injuries to his head.

Schumacher was not traveling fast at the time, Kehm said, so those with him were initially shocked by how badly he was hurt. "It's not a question of speed but of the angle that you hit the rock," she said.

Kehm also cautioned against reading too much into the doctors' latest report.

"They made it very clear that they are not optimistic, that ... there was a slight improvement compared to the situation yesterday, which doesn't mean we can be optimistic yet," she said. "It's much too early to say."

Kehm declined to comment on the emotional state of Schumacher's family.

But she said "heartwarming" messages of support have come flooding in via e-mails, text messages and letters from people around the world.
