I recently purchased a motorized buck for the front lawn, which was the display model, thus the last one in
the store and while I was waiting patiently for them to disconnect it, the manager promised me 10% off!
When I got to the cash register, the young lady there had no idea how to deduct 10% on the machine, let
alone figure out that 10% of $92.00 was $9.20! She thought she was doing me a favour by reducing it to
$89.00, a number which she relayed to me with the greatest of confidence and a lovely smile!!

And, those two examples don't even include how terrible our youngsters are at basic math calculations unless
they have a calculator in front of them.

That's less of a problem with modern technology and more with the education system....

I thought that's what I said? Let me try again, ok? Because of our over-reliance on technology
(including and possibly especially in the Education system), no one seems to see the need to
learn how to make those calculations because they have a little doo-hickey that does it for them.

Totally agree, I'm afraid that in my old age, the doctors and lawyers will use "only" techonology for what ails me!!

Is tax added on on top of what the price on the ticket says?

(Before anyone thinks that is a silly question, it might be a cultural thing)
In the UK unless you are in a trade outlet the tax (VAT) is included in the ticket price.

It's NOT a silly question!! And, yes, here in Ontario (not sure about the rest of Canada),
sales taxes are added at the cash register.

I wish the taxes were included a la VAT!!

I think a lot would depend on the youngster. You're also basing your examples on folks working a cash register at store, which means everything is done for them. If they had to use an adding machine, calculate the tax and hand the appropriate change without the machine telling them the appropriate change then they would have needed to hire people that could do that!

Surely this is part of a basic education. If your education system is working, shouldn't everyone coming out of it be able to do this very basic sort of stuff. Just like they all come out with the basic communication skills of being able to speak read and write ........ oh wait....

The young woman at the register was probably in high school, so was probably working there part-time!
Though I agree that you get what you pay for, it's ridiculous that these youngsters are computer-type wiz kids who have
abnormally large thumbs from texting, tweeting and playing video games!

In a bizarre twist on the technology side of things. I am sure WB will see my meaning of this. I recently rekindled my love of electronics, where as I would of just put some electronic components the fad is to just put a microcontroller in and program that to do it.

I was watching a show on how they make the new Jaguar XJ F type and at the end of the build two dweeby guys one with a computer plugged into the car, drive around the test track and are not only able to tune the engine setting, but the suspension and shift points and everything... it's ALL processor controlled!
