Okay, I was happy with the surge of Mercedes and the fact that they were the second best team over the course of the season but Lewis drove a sensible and mistake free year with some bad luck costing some points. Even by the standards of Hamilton fans, his year was far from one where he showcased his skills.

It was always about the 2014 season, so that's where I'm keeping my eye.

His driving and results considering the context for me was better than Seb in his context. If it wasn't for the blow out at Silverstone, most likely everyone would consider it brilliant year for battering Nico. Just because of some bad luck the results are interpreted as inconsistency and being closely matched by Nico.

He adapted to a German team, his first new team in a decade, beat the incumbent, had issues with brakes etc. would Alonso or Seb have had better results in the same context? I really don't think so

I think the closeness to Nico leads many to discount his performance, and Lewis' self flagellation despite a cracked chassis adds to the impression he wasn't as good as 2012.

I think considering the context he matched 2012, if he had won Silverstone it would be a completely different story. Let's not forget that he had just settled down to whipping Nico every single race when he cracked the chassis
