@paolofilise - A sketch of @InsideFerrari 059/3 power unit based on the memory of the 3D video shown us, in Maranello yesterday

I'm assuming the animation video of the engine is nothing like our 2014 donk. The sketch is by one of the few media and experts who were invited to actually see the engine at Maranello. There was a strict policy of no cameras etc. BBC and Sky not invited.

Looking at the sketch and comparing it to what I've seen of the Merc and Renault engines there are two things that stand out to me.

1st - the exhaust is much closer/tighter to the engine itself and shorter distance to the turbo. Negative would be heat management and engine longevity. Positive is less native lag which in turn would be less ERS energy needed to be applied to spin up the turbo leaving more ERS for other use.

2nd - the intercooler looks much smaller and embedded lower in the engine itself. Same negative as above, not sure of what the benefit might be here ...... lower COG?

Some really interesting bits of news coming out over the past few days. Firstly, as I mentioned here (over in the Ferrari thread) the LaFerrari test mule has been back on track.

As reported by Omnicorse (full article here), the car has had significant mods made to it.

There is clearly a single exhaust seen and lots more downforce added to the car. This will be for extended testing at higher (more f1 like) speeds. You'd think the ERS is also integrated and running. If you look closely you can see the ERS sticker on the side of the car.

This is very good news that the team is well advanced in terms of having the total package running on a track.

The other interesting take away from this article and recent comments from Luca is we can definitely be optimistic that Ferrari is planning a return to LMP1. They will have plenty of cash and LM racing has no budget caps.

I'd translate 'batteria unica' as 'single battery' - not too much unique about it

I think that is yet another prescriptive element of the new regs.

The bit that looked interesting from that sketch was how tight the exhaust is to the engine. That is quite different to what I have seen from the Renault and Merc donks.

It's pretty cool that the team is allowing the fans to select the car's name for this year. Basically voting goes on until the winning name is revealed on Jan 24. That's the day before images of the car will be released.

You can vote >>here<<. You can vote up to 5 times.
Here's how the voting is going until now.
