It boiled down to us having mutual dislike for each other. I just happened to have a little more tolerance, he was a smug prick. Sorry Sagi, not all teachers inspire their students.

Totally agree with you!! There are a lot of teachers I dread working with!!
Mind you, they don't like working with someone who won't agree with them!!

And in today's world which of those skill sets are more beneficial to the person and the community in general? I know which I encourage in the kids in my class!!!

The mistake you are making, is that you are preparing your students for today's world by encouraging skillsets that apply to today. Today's world will not likely exist tomorrow.

Kids always need skills that allow them to see a big picture and visualise complex global organisational structures instead of only a sequential logical convergent style. Todays students are trained in a way that produces compliant workers and soldiers and not divergent thinking entrepreneurs or problem solvers

IMHO

Wow ... big words Dude. Students need a variety of skillsets in anticipation of a changing world, which is exactly what the Canadian system emphasizes. Not all students are alike and thus those skillsets may vary, as the role individuals play in future society also does. In simple terms, teaching students to think and be able to adapt to change is the goal for most. Being able to anticipate change or (even better) initiate change, is for the very few.

Beautifully said, operaman!! The Education system here in Ontario has changed drastically in the last 15 years since I started teaching,
let alone since my own two were in school. Not only do we have a "differentiated learning" model of teaching, whereby each child brings
its strengths to the table when working in a small (3-4 students) group setting with peers who have different strengths.

What a lot of people don't realize is that the teacher's role is one of being a "facilitator" and not of teaching at our youngsters!!

Another thing people don't realize is that the education of a child does not occur only in the "institution of learning" it attends!!
Education is a responsibility ALL of us share, including those that don't have children of their own.

I may not be an expert at expressing it. But I do feel that kids who are a bit disruptive and non conformist should be encouraged as much as the ones who do exactly as they are told and conform.
Must be annoying for teachers having amatuers think they have easy answers though

You've done well to express your thoughts, as far as I'm concerned. And, if it were possible, I'd invite you into
my own classroom where there are a huge variety of strengths and interests, as well as diversity in lifestyles.
I have one poster up in my class which visualizes my own philosophy and everyone is expected to follow:

The problem is that teaching, just like every other profession is subject to the 80/20 rule of life.

You've hit the nail on the head!! There are 20% who view teaching as a profession shouldn't be teachers!
The other 80% who view it as a vocation and take the inherent responsibilities seriously, are a true educators!!

I once read that if you wanted to create the worst possible environment to teach children - it would be a traditional classroom. Funny thing is, all the teachers I admired had one thing in common - they all did their best to morph that environment or to get the kids out whenever they could.

..... and that's my two cents worth :)

Very well-said!! The problem is that our education system is not seen as an investment in our future by any government that I know of!!
It's viewed as an expense that grows exponentially, especially if we want to keep up with the latest teaching methods and technology!!

Until that "basic" philosophy is addressed, we'll always have that one-room schoolhouse environment with a 21st Century learning expectation!!

((p.s. health care is also viewed in this light!! We don't want to pay for it; but, we want the best of it!!))

Edit: I just read your comments, operaman, on the politics of teaching!! Seems we agree!!

Oooops!!! Looks like I've totally derailed this particular thread by replying to everyone at once!!
My apologies; but, without power/internet and the preparations for the festivities, I haven't had
a chance to catch up on anything!!

Maybe the moderators can move this discussion to its own thread? :boxedin:
