It's cheaper than taking them twice a year to a tyre person to have them changed over. The car will be kept for a long time.

I cant believe that? Really? Wow.

Yep. The Volvo, that the yeti is replacing, is 16 yrs old. Saved money times over by having two sets of wheels for that. Tyre people charge stupid money to switch tyres and it's twice a year. Wheels you can do yourself.

Yeah, I just looked into it - anything up to £25 a corner! Wow, £100 a time, twice a year. You are right, over a lifetime, alloys are much cheaper. Sorry I doubted you.

Women are the best accountants in the world. Fact.

Except for when it comes to Handbags and Shoes. Then they go bonkers. made up Fact.

Accountants....accounting for cash inflow and outflows.

You're talking about money management.....entirely different kettle of fish. And I'd say that's a fact as well. :hehe:

I have done the same in the past. I went through a stage of buying sets of allow wheels on ebay because you could get a set of alloys with 5-6mm of tread for 50 quid. Wear the tyres out and sell the alloys tyre less

The excuses are getting old... these "official" statements frankly make it seem like Pirelli has their head up their ass.

ESPNF1 Pirelli has reassured Formula One that its 2014 tyres are safe after Nico Rosberg suffered a blowout at 320km/h while testing a prototype tyre.

Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and Toro Rosso have been taking part in a Pirelli-run test this week in Bahrain to give the Italian tyre manufacturer a chance to nail down its 2014 specification. On the morning of the final day of running Rosberg tweeted that he had a blowout at 320km/h, although the tweet was soon deleted.

Pirelli issued a statement at the end of the day saying the tyre on Rosberg's car would not feature in next year's championship and that the safety of its tyres "is not in question".

"The tyre tests in Barhain regarded a number of prototypes, which were completely innovative in terms of structure and compounds, with the aim of developing the most suitable solutions for the next season," read the statement.

"This morning Nico Rosberg's Mercedes was fitted with one of these prototypes, a tyre which had only been tested in the laboratory and which will not be proposed again. Thus, the safety of the tyres which will be supplied for the next championship is not in question. The accident which happened to Rosberg's car is being investigated and the findings will be communicated to the FIA and the teams."

The issue is particularly sensitive for Pirelli after a series of tyre failures this year that culminated in multiple blowouts at the British Grand Prix. It changed the structure of its 2013 tyres to combat the issue in the second half of the season.

...and if a driver just happens to get hurt, well thats what testing is for...

And, that's the first thing that popped into my mind when I read about Rosberg's incident!!
Doesn't Pirelli have a "similulator" to experiment on??
#385069
I wouldn't need a simulator to tell me how much I could blow a balloon up without it exploding. Making tyres is not exactly rocket science or a trip to the moon. I mean how can one of the oldest tyre makers need a car crashing at 300 kph to work out its not safe to drive at 300.

'Oh it's a perfectly fine tyre at 299, let's see how fast before it pops, ah, an extra 1 kph, you woulda guessed that when we designed it'.

You'd think Pirelli and Ferrari both used the same management principles or something. Spending too much time politicking instead of engineering

Ok... you had me agreeing with you until you decided to gratuitously involve Ferrari!

• The total number of Pirelli slick tyres used in 2013 was 23,300 and the total number of rain tyres used was 2,400. All of them will be recycled.

Recycled? Oh boy, delamination galore in 2014

They destroy the tyres but recycle the natural rubber elements left, maybe some synthetic bits as well
