On a side note. I must admit, I take my hat off to Andrew. He finally managed to follow through with his threat to leave. On about the 3rd attempt. I didnt expect him to.

Well done Andrew, if you are reading this.

Probably forgot his password to log into the forum and also the password of his registered email address with no backups.

Andrew left?! whaaaaaaaaat when? when were these threats made that he was leaving?

[What's Burning?]

ESPNF1; Lauda admitted he wanted Brawn to stay at the team for another year and revealed that he would continue as a consultant until he finds a job elsewhere.
"I'm very sad about it because I wanted him to stay another year," he added. "But he says he wants to go fishing. So I really tried hard but he stays a consultant to me which I think is very good and important.

[racechick]

It's all very well asking him to stay, but bringing in Lowe and Wolf wasn't exactly a vote of confidence in him was it. Had that not happened he'd still be there at Mercedes.

No disrespect there to Wolf and Lowe, they may do a brilliant job, but Brawn already has, he's proven. If the going gets tough in a championship fight I know which guy I'd want at the helm!

[CookinFlat6]

To be fair, Brawn took 100mill off Merc for a mistake by Honda, and he was only at the team because of a tie in period. Merc had to assume that he was going take his money and go fishing at some point. They would have been mad to expect him with no equity to remain beyond his tie in period. So they made moves and Brawn turned out to be the rarest of F1 animals, he actually did his job well and handed them a structured and potentially successful enterprise

Now he is off and Merc are better off than they would be as 40% stakeholders at McLaren

Paddy is possibly the strongest mechanical engineering project manager on the grid, he was responsible for McLarens technical expertise for years, if he is the trackside boss, apart from strategy he is the best money can buy for deploying resources and developing intra season. I am not sure about strategy and pitwall calls though. In this next era of non aero he is more valuable than Newey as long as the teams has the right talent in all areas under him

Also it is well documented that he thinks Lewis is the ultimate driver to build a car around, and he knows Lewis' needs. It's even been said that he left McLaren in protest to having to dilute efforts to make feel safe in the car

As long as Ross goes fishing or stays out of F1 strategy then Merc Paddy and Lewis should be happy. My only concern is Paddy trying too hard to be TP and making the type of decisions on strategy he learnt at Whitmarshs McLaren

[racechick]

Brawn just inspires such confidence. He's done it at Benetton, Ferrari, Brawn and would likely have seen it done at Merc.
Lowe should have the right men under him...figuratively of course because that's what Ross has spent the last three years setting up.
I think Lowe will be ok. I'm just not completely sure where he stood during the Whitmarsh/button/ Lewis shenanigans. I know he rates Lewis right up there and went on record saying how much more freedom a designer has when Lewis is driving ( this when Lewis was not even in f1, just testing and being compared to the regular drivers) . But I remember that time when Jenson was all over the show, when Lewis turned up at the factory and all the engineers( except his own race engineer.....I think) had got his data and were trying to out figure out how to get Button fast. It's the most pissed off at the team I've ever heard Lewis over that. So where was Lowe on that day? Was he round that table do you think with Lewis' data? Or was he cross about it? And where was he when they gave Lewis the wrong wing data for spa?
It's just little things like this, where did he stand on it all. I guess he wasn't boss so he just had to tow the line.
but brawn, I have not one issue with anything he's done in the year he's worked with Lewis. He's left the ship in good shape but I still wish he was on it.

Interesting question RC, regarding Paddys involvement in McLaren diverting all resources to making silk purses out of pigs ears, and turning the fastest car into an understeering lemon.

The only hard fact we have is that he left the team. Cant do much more than that if certain things dont sit well with you. And he fact he was prepared to go to Williams suggests he just wanted out

Thing is when people say Mclaren are good at developing and catching up intra season they will generally be talking about Paddys contribution to Mclaren over the past decade.

Aero was his blind spot, and the new era with its return from the 'dark arts' of aero should see him as a perfect trackside boss. Turning feedback into progress every weekend. Mclarens prowess before 2009 aero/Newey/RBR was down to Paddy

As long as his role is strictly marshalling all technical resources and team finances into beating everyone else like he did previously, should be ok. I just worry about the poiltical and strategic stuff. Is Toto any good at this? no evidence, Williams didnt exactly take off when he was around

Yes Lowe left didn't he, and actions speak louder than words.
I see toto as the suit, the sponsor getter, the smooth talker, the front.
And when it comes to getting down and getting dirty politically, well that's where Lauda can play his part. I've not been sure about Lauda, Disliked him in fact, but he's one you'd want in your corner not against you. I was worried how he'd be with Lewis but I think that works well, there's mutual respect and when Lewis lets a bad day at the office get to him, Lauda can put it in perspective. I've also seen more overt support for Lewis from Lauda when the critics set to, than I saw at all his time at McLaren.
Let's hope it all pans out well

And the support seems to be of the genuine caring kind.
