I don't see why not just storing the Username anyway, as that's how I assume it currently works.

to be fair I do not think it would be that hard to implement. However an Admin feature would be needed to tidy it all up and to add race results. apart from that the basic encoding I do not think would be that hard.

Admin control is what I've got now to enter the picks and add the results. Are you talking about integrating it right into this site? I think there was an issue with different versions of PhP that prevented it from happening the first time around when MOA set it all up.

The Admin IP thing would be just to check that no cheeky scamp tried to enter pics for another user, or entered more than one team... we all know how grumpy people can get if that happens!

Nope, it does exactly what you tell it to. If you were to tell a computer "Go to the shops, get me 2 pints of milk, and if they've got eggs get half a dozen" if the shop has eggs, the computer would come back with half a dozen pints of milk. They do literally what you say.
