So, David Ward has withdrawn his bid to stand, and therefore Jean Todt will stand unopposed in the election for president of the FIA.

David Ward has withdrawn his bid to stand against Jean Todt in the election for president of the FIA.

Ward confirmed his withdrawal in a letter to the FIA today (PDF) saying “it has not proved possible for me to secure the required number of regional vice presidents for sport to ensure the eligibility of my list”.

“I, therefore, would like to offer my congratulations to Jean Todt who will secure a second term uncontested if not unopposed.”

Ward said the requirement for candidates to obtain the backing of seven vice presidents “has given control over whether or not there can be a contested election at all to the FIA’s sport regions”.

“Moreover the use of support agreements in advance of the election makes it very hard for any candidate to obtain the required vice presidents for their list.” Ward complained to the FIA’s ethics committee about Todt using support agreements in this way but his objections were not upheld.

Ward has given his support to amendments to the FIA’s election process which have been proposed for the next World Motor Sport Council meeting in December.

“If the statute amendments are passed on 6th December the FIA will have taken a significant step towards a more democratic future. I very much hope that the amendments will not ‘talked out’ by the leadership in the World Councils, but voted on by secret ballot in the General Assembly.

“Whatever the outcome, I think progress in the governance of the FIA is inevitable. We are living in an age of transparency with new demands for accountability from governments, corporations and sports federations alike.”

Do people think Jean Todt has done ok? Has he actually done anything? There seems to be little crop up in the press about him - good or bad.

The best thing about Todt is that you hardly hear about him....and the sport seems to be ok. If you discount Pirelli.

Unlike the Mosley guy who couldn't keep his face off the cameras, it's refreshing to have a Prez who knows he's the 'director' of the show rather than the 'main protagonist', and Todt is fulfilling this criteria. Personally, I think people could do a lot worse than Toddy.

Regardless of Todt's performance as FIA president, the rules here definitely do need an overhaul. :/

Todt is the president, but he does well at letting the best people for each particular job do that job rather than control everything. I also thought his handling of the Mercedes "testgate" scandal was excellent. Under the last 2 presidents, they would have made the decision! Todt on the other hand allowed a fair trial and a fair verdict to be reached by an independent judging panel. Whether you agreed or disagreed with the penalty awarded, at least everyone knows it was handled fairly!

I agree with positive comments above. As is the case with most sports organizations, you less you hear about the admin's involvement the better.

Yep, I've got to agree here. I was doubtful when he first got elected, but the fact that one never hears of him is for the best.

Me too jab. I didn't want him to get the job, but he's a vast improvement on what's gone before. Whilst I can't think of vast swaithes of improvement to the sport that have come about under his tenure, neither do I see an egotistical bar steward using the sport for his own ends. So I'm pleasantly surprised, I'll settle for that.
Now sort the rules out Jean and we'll warm to you even more.

Does it matter? He can do what he wants as long as he doesn't take sides or get too close to certain teams when politics start interfering with his reign. Mosley made that grave mistake and f**ked things up badly in many respects. Todt can become a zillionnaire by manipulating whatever he wants as long as the show is fair and he gives all teams an equal hand (no hand).

Thats what im trying to work out - juts because we dont see him acting the same way as Mosley, doesnt mean he isnt - mybe he is just MUCH better at hiding it.

Im kind of indifferent to it either way.
