I don't think the idea is to put Massa out of contention, the way I see it is that any other driver that is using their engine from the last race has already done a full race with that engine, whereas Massa hasn't (only half a race) and any driver using a new engine this race will then have to use the same engine (possibly affected by Bahrains dust) for the next race when Massa'll have a new one. IMO it puts Massa in quite a good situation for the next two races if he can keep it on the track.

With Massa's record he has done enourmous amounts to improve engine reliabilty. Just spin off after a few laps and the engine will be good for 5 or 6 races!!

A cynic may suggest that Ferrari are looking to get Massa out of title race as early as possible so the team can have a de facto one-two operation.
