Sooooooooooooo....

If McLaren do take on Magnussen, leaving Perez free for next year... What do we think will happen with the rest of the drivers market?

Could Perez go back to Sauber? Would he leave F1 altogether. Or would he take the seat of another driver we think are certain shoe ins elsewhere at Williams and the like......?

No. I don't believe McLaren will change.

No, but if they DID. How do you think that'd affect the drivers market...?

It will mean every team apart form one(Mercedes) would have a new driver meaning we will be in a completely changed era of F1 in 2014. The era of the silly seasons...

If McLaren drop Perez, another team will definitely pick him up. his skills + financial backing are too good to pass up.

Well, maybe. I actually fear he'd be left out in the cold if McLaren dropped him. With Lotus set to confirm The Hulk and Fat John, if Magnussen went to McLaren it would mean Chilton would likely stay at Marussia alongside Bianchi. Force India will want to keep at least one driver (it's looking like that may be Sutil) and the lure of Maldonado's PDVSA money might be irresistible for them. That leaves Williams, but I think they would want someone with more experience alongside Bottas, so Massa is the obvious choice there. So his options would realistically be Caterham and maybe a return to Sauber, but it depends on how much faith they have in Gutiérrez to lead the team with Sirotkin in the other car.

I do not, however, expect McLaren to drop Pérez for Magnussen this year. But then, I was wrong about Hamilton to Mercedes, Raikkonen to Ferrari, Ricciardo to Red Bull, Bianchi staying at Marussia... :hehe:

I don't see why Massa would be such an obvious choice for Williams if they lose Maldonado. Perez has just as much experience as Maldonado, and Williams would want to replace his PDVSA money, which Massa would not bring.

And I haven't heard anything about Force India's plans yet. Why would they choose to keep Sutil over DiResta? I think DiResta has done a better job over the course of the season, even including his streak of bad luck from belgium through korea. Paul has 48 WDC points vs Sutil's 29.

Sutil has money and FI's finances aren't in good shape.

As for Massa over Pérez, the former is a former championship contender and proven race-winner. We know he can be fast, certainly in qualifying and he has put together a sponsorship package that would bring good money to Williams. Given all the changes they've made recently (and are planning to make in the near future), I think they will be looking for someone with plenty of experience.

Massa may be a proven race winner, but that hasn't been in many years, certainly not after his big crash. If he can't win in a Ferrari anymore, what can they expect him to do in a Williams?

Is that so? I knew he had some money from Medion (somewhere between $5-10m), but I wasn't aware he had Mercedes links. Heck, to be honest I'm kind of surprised he has any backing at all after the nightclub incident, but there you go! :P

Well, I guess that's the big question, isn't it? I don't think he's that much slower than Alonso normally, he certainly showed pace against both Schumacher and Raikkonen previously, and there was a period during 2010 where he seemed to have pulled things back together. However, I think he's a bit like Barrichello in that he suffers when his confidence is knocked and he doesn't feel that he has the support of the team behind him. It would definitely be very interesting to see him in another team and out of Alonso's shadow, but I can certainly see where you are coming from. It might be a big risk to take.

He was comfortably leading the German GP in 2010, we all know what happened next....

Well, McLaren have opted to sign Magnussen. Bold move, but alongside the technical signings and the Honda deal, it looks like they're focusing on a strong future. I wonder if this means they're lining up Vandoorne for 2015 or 2016. That would be awesome.

I guess this is why they've delayed the sponsor announcement, as it wouldn't be likely that Telmex would do the deal without Pérez being onboard. I imagine that Sergio could be a good alternative for any team that was looking at having to take on Maldonado for finances. Perhaps a return to Sauber, or a move to Force India?
