Ferrari Have said they're not going to change Massa's engine for the next race even though they're free to do so without penalty. At what point would a change incur a penalty, do they have to state what their intentions are before the weekend starts or can they change the engine any time up until qualifying starts?

I think they can change it until the weekend starts, which is the quali, not practice.

Saturday practice, actually. :)

To al4x, no, I don't think it is. And the heat in Bahrain would've led me to assume that they would have changed the engine...

'its an unusual decision, spain isnt too hard on engines is it?'

Well, by the end of Bahrain his engine'll only have done one and a half race distances when they're designed for at least 2. Also, from what I gather Bahrain is pretty bad for the engines because of the dust and sand.

yeah, i guess thats a good point, the engine will only have to do 1,1/2 races

forgot about the dust as well

makes sense

I guess they figured "he'll probably crash anyway..."

They also stated that their priority is to develop in the reliability area - thus, it makes sense to leave the engine in to gather more data.

Also, unless I've got the rules wrong, there is no point in them changing the engine when they can probably get away without doing it and save their get-out-of-gaol-free card, as it were, for later in the season.

If they were to change the engine they wouldn't use the 'free first engine change', Massa never finished the last race.

i dont think that rule would be applicable here because it wasnt a failure in the first place

A cynic may suggest that Ferrari are looking to get Massa out of title race as early as possible so the team can have a de facto one-two operation.

I did not want to say it but I thought it  . I hope Felipe make's me eat my word's though because he need's to finish a race for his mental state which cannot be the best at the moment.
