How would you sanction them? I mean, they don't even have the money to pay the drivers, so any financial penalties will be rather pointless.

In cycling, when riders are not paid in a reasonable time the team loses it's ability to enter events.

That would be a monumentally stupid idea to implement in F1.

Maybe it should be lodged with FOM who pay the drivers out of the teams winnings.

Why is F1 any different. Teams that can't pay their own employees don't deserve to be in F1.

You'd effectively put them out of business. Think about it: a significant amount of their income is made up of sponsorship deals and sponsors want TV exposure; if they aren't getting TV time, they aren't going to pay up, which means the team will have less money and even less chance of paying the drivers. It solves nothing, but it does threaten the jobs (and thus livelihoods) of 400+ other employees to take that kind of approach. Are the two drivers more important than everyone else at the team? Perhaps instead of baying for blood it would be better to look at the reasons that F1 is in a mess, financially (because let's face it, it isn't just Lotus that has these kind of money problems), and to seek ways in which the situation can be resolved. Otherwise you just run the risk of causing irreperable damage to the sport as a whole.

30 million could be a new front wing. Think about it that way.

Or salaries for better engineers. How much do you think they pay engineers? 30 *million* would go a long way.

That's the thing, I mean I get what you're saying but it's a matter of scale, 30 million is Ferrari's catering budged for the season... to a team lower down it does mean a good infusion, but so does finishing one spot ahead of your competition in the WCC. Look at Marrusia standing to make 40 for their 12th placed spot and Caterham making no money. In their case, a better driver can make the difference in dragging a car just one spot further up the grid.

The gulf between the haves and the have nots in the sport is HUGE, and to a mid field team 30 may help to keep the doors open but it won't help to catapult a team up the grid like what Hulkenberg is single handedly doing at Sauber.

Sorry for the late response; I can never keep track of where all my conversations are in these driver/team megathreads.

That's the thing though... Hulk is driving his bottom off for them, but they're still only 7th in WCC standings, and can't even out-develop Force India (who is also financially struggling, right?). So what good is a great driver if it doesn't help them actually gain any places in the WCC? They can't keep your car relevant throughout the whole season. Engineers can.

It's a catch-22, you need good engineers to make use of good drivers and vice versa. If you have a clown who can't give proper feedback on what the car's doing, the engineers get misguided and go off-compass with the car as we've seen with both midfield and top teams.

Hulk might be doing what he's doing thanks to a solid engineering team but how do we know he's some superstar in the making when his teammate is just so far behind? The Sauber might actually be a pretty decent car, and he's doing what the car can actually produce while his teammate is bringing in the sponsorship cash to keep 1 car at the front at least.

It's all about the balance....how much cash-strapped a team is vs what sort of performance they are looking to deliver on track. Only the teams would know their own situation best. Sadly for Williams, they needed Crashtor on board probably just to keep their cars running in F1. At least he delivered them a magical win during his tenure.

Broken front suspension on the first lap!! :crying:
Leaves the track early, without waiting for the debrief!
Can't really blame him, what's there to debrief after 30 seconds?

Kimi f**ks up royally but leaves the circuit James Hunt style, I bet he's got another new truckload of fans for doing that.

A bit drastic I admit. Perhaps I should have added that F1 should in fact take over the operation of the team, as has been done by the NHL and make the payments. That way all the employees get paid. When the powers that be realize that they are losing millions to prop up failing teams, perhaps they will address the real issues of the sport. Allowing teams to continue under their current ownership, when they fail to meet obligations to personnel is not acceptable. How long do you think Lotus would have lasted if they had defaulted on their fees to F1?
