Hey Guys,

Over the last few years we've seen that the FOM are finally experimenting more and more with new types of cameras angles, positions and types below is a list of some of the camera angles/positions/types we now have in Formula 1 (old and new)

  • Slow motion (replays)
  • Infrared cameras (looking at the heat)
  • In/on helmet cameras (looks similar to how the drivers see)
  • ECU cameras (looking at drivers face)
  • Floor cameras (looking back at the tray)
  • Rear pointing camera (Looks at rear wheels and suspension)
  • Rear wing cameras (Looks at whos behind)
  • Nose cameras (Looking forward)
  • Front wing cameras (Looking at the tyres)
  • Normal TV camera position
We've now been introduced to another new camera at Abu Dhabi which is mounted just behind and lower from the normal tv camera and it has the ability to pan from looking forwards to backwards so it has a 180 degrees viewing angle.

What camera would you like to be seen/used more and why?
Does anyone have any other camera angles they'd like?

Regards
Hyflex

There is one on the nose of the car. That has to be raised next year so the teams don't use the extra bodywork holding the camera for aerodynamic effect.

Good thread

I would like to see drone mounted cams. Maybe one tasked to fly over the pit lane as well as over certain corners. Maybe have a few over the grid at the start. They wouldnt have to be directly overhead for safety reasons, but could have safe 'tracks' still allowing the overhead shots. The technology is available and cheap in the context of FOMs budget.

Could even have these autonomous flying platform mounted cams tasked to track selected cars round the track, using a zoom and gps, there wouldnt need to be much flying around to keep the car in sight the whole lap.

As long as it wasnt an american company suppling the technology, otherwise they might not be able to resist attaching hellfire missiles and taking a pop at someone in the audience using a pay as you go sim

Infrared cameras (looking at the heat)

These cameras are a tedious waste of time. They show us what is already obvious. That the tyres are hot.

I'd rather see the normal picture, and get a proper view of the action.

There is a certain camera at Silverstone, I think it *might* be Luffield, which is on a zip wire* that follows the car around two or three turns, and it gives some amazing shots.

I also think there have been a few pit lanes that use this type of camera before.

*im sure there is another way to describe the technicalities of it, but hopefully you get what I mean.

:yikes: we know they get hot, but it's the visual of hoe the heat begins, how it dissipates, how it moves from tire to tire through the corners, what parts other parts of the car get hot that you wouldn't expect. Belying some technical trick as in Red Bull's tea tray.

I :cloud9: infra red cams on the cars.

This. On as many places as you can get them.

They trialled it at Silverstone as a main feature, everyone loved it but they never reused out...

I also forgot to mention helicopter shots which suck unless the helicopter is moving along close to track
